Vikings, Wildcats play for title

PALOUSE - The Garfield-Palouse and Colton girls basketball teams will face off for the District 9 title Friday evening, Feb. 18.

The title tilt is set for 5 p.m. at Dayton High School, 615 S. Third St., Dayton.

By reaching the game, both the Vikings and the Wildcats have earned a regional berth.

The Vikings enter the district championship as the No. 1 seed, while the cross-county rival Wildcats enter as No. 2.

The loser will have to play for second place agains the winner of the consolation bracket.

The Vikings are coming off a 46-16 semifinal win over No. 3-seed Pomeroy last Friday, Feb. 11.

The Garfield-Palouse girls were on fire from the start, taking a 10-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and expanding the margin to 18-4 at the half.

The Pirates hit only one shot in the first half, while adding two free throw points. By the end of the third, the Vikings had a 32-9 lead.

Colton enters the championship after dunking No. 4, Oakesdale, 47-32.

Individual scores were not reported.

While the Nighthawks fell in teh semifinal, they will play again in a loser-out game against Sunnyside Chrstiann.

That game was set for 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Dayton High School.The winner will advance to play the winner of the Pomeroy-DeSales game scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. the same day.

The losers of both games will be eliminated from the post-season, while the winners will play another loser-out game at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19.

The winner of that final game will grab the third regional berth and play for second place.
