Vikings softball returns after 2-year absence

The Gar/Pal girls are back on the softball diamond, fielding a team again after two seasons without.

Led by two seniors – institutions of Vikings’ girls sports for the past four years, Payson Griner and Katie Arrasmith – and four eighth-graders filling out a 12-name roster, the team has started 1-2 on the year.

Beginning with a 16-3 loss at Pomeroy March 20, they followed that with a 20-10 win at Touchet in a doubleheader, losing the second game by the same score, 20-10.

Griner and Arrasmith led at bat.

“We have a lot of strong hitters,” said coach Rochelle Pedersen. “It’s just getting them to make good decisions at the plate. We’re getting too greedy, swinging at the first pitch, too excited.”

Taking the mound for Garfield/Palouse is one of three eighth-graders; Kenzi Pedersen, Madison Cloninger and Maci Brantner.

The roster also includes juniors Jayden Askins at third base and Kate Wilson, outfield; sophomores Lexi Brantner, second base/outfield, Taylor Humes, outfield; freshmen Paige Collier, second base/outfield, and Miranda Richards, third base/outfield, who is out with an injury now.

“I have a feeling we’ll be better than some of the teams think we’ll be,” said Pedersen.

The Vikings play next on Friday at Potlatch (J.V.) at 4:30 p.m. followed by a doubleheader at Colton Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
