Colfax tops Liberty Lancers twice; Pullman ends Bulldog win string

Colfax pitcher Cal Gregory had a no-hitter going all the way to the last out against Liberty in the second game Friday at Pullman.

Colfax baseball players moved their record to 8-0 with two wins over Liberty Friday afternoon at WSU’s Bailey-Brayton Field. The Bulldog-Lancer games were moved to the WSU carpet because rain last week put the Liberty field out of commission.

Colfax took the first game 12-1 with Parker Huber allowing the Lancers just two hits. The Bulldogs rapped seven hits in the opener.

Liberty scored its lone run in the third inning.That was the only score for the Lancers during the day.

Kyle Appel had three hits with two triples, and Layne Gingerich and Nate Akesson each had two hits.

Cal Gregory pitched a 12-0 shutout in the second game. Gregory had a no-hitter going until the seventh inning when Noah Beach, one of the Tekoa/Rosalia players on the Lancers’ team this year, hit a single down the third base line in the last inning.

Akesson had four hits in the second game with two triples, and Huber had two hits with a double.

The Bulldogs Saturday sustained their first loss of the season when they went back to WSU to make up a non-league game with Pullman. The hounds prevailed 4-1.

Colfax Coach Scott Parrish noted the Bulldogs put runners on the bases against Pullman, but they couldn’t get them across the plate.

“We needed those two-out hits, and we just didn’t get them,” he commented.

He credited Kyle Appel with going the distance against Pullman in the Saturday game. The ‘hounds totaled nine hits in the non-leaguer.

Colfax had seven hits against the ‘hounds with Appel and Kelan Becker each rapping doubles.

Brandon Lees rapped a two-run triple in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie on the way to the 4-1 Pullman win. Lees also had a double.

Pullman Coach Mike Kincade used four pitchers against the Bulldogs.

Pullman faced Colfax after dropping Fife 16-7 in an earlier game on the WSU field. The ‘hounds totaled 15 hits off the Fife pitchers.
