Road to state: District Nine tournament starts for county girls, boys

Colton junior post Abby Kelly works for another basket in a win at Palouse Feb. 2. Colton takes the no. 1 seed in the district tournament, which began Wednesday night.

The Southeast 1B/District Nine tournament began Wednesday, Feb. 7, with girls games at home sites. The boys start Thursday, with the top six teams in the league competing for two spots to advance to the state sub-tournament.

For the girls, final regular season standings are Colton in first, Pomeroy second and Oakesdale third. In fourth and fifth – for seedings in the tournament, by draw at start of the year – are Garfield/Palouse, fourth, and Touchet. Taking the last slot at No. 6 is St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse.

For the boys, a tie for first between Pomeroy and Oakesdale gives Pomeroy the No. 1 seed by number draw at the start of the year. The Nighthawks take No. 2 followed by Garfield/Palouse close behind with the third seed. (Gar/Pal beat both Pomeroy and Oakesdale in the regular season). Touchet and Prescott are the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, also by number draw. Colton is in at No. 6.

Wednesday’s girls games included St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse at Oakesdale and Touchet at Garfield/Palouse.

Thursday’s boys action starts with Colton at Palouse to play Gar/Pal at 6 p.m. and Prescott at Touchet.

On Friday, for the girls, the winner of Garfield/Palouse and Touchet will play at Colton at 6 p.m. The winner of Oakesdale and St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse goes to Pomeroy.

On Saturday, for the boys, the winner of Touchet and Prescott plays at Pomeroy at 6 p.m. while the winner of Garfield/Palouse and Colton plays at Oakesdale at the same time.

From there, the tournament moves to Walla Walla Community College where the boys and girls championships games will be played Friday night, Feb. 16, in the WWCC igloo-dome. On Saturday, consolation games will decide the final entry onto the road to state.

At right: Garfield/Palouse freshman guard Austin Jones scores against Colton in a 59-45 win.
