Pomeroy tops Colton twice to take league

In a doubleheader to decide the Southeast 1B league baseball champions, Colton and Pomeroy met April 29 and Pomeroy took it, winning both, 5-3 and 9-2. Playing at the Wildcats' field, senior pitcher and all-around Colton force Brady Chadwick collided with Pomeroy catcher Cade Gingerich in the fifth inning of game one resulting in Chadwick's ejection.

Deemed a malicious play as Gingerich had the ball in his glove and was knocked backward, Chadwick was gone.

Chadwick, pitching for Colton (12-5) before the incident, had already struck out 12 Pomeroy batters. The Wildcats led 2-0.

The game changed as Pomeroy scored three runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to take the win.

With Chadwick ineligible for game two, the Pirates put together 14 hits and scored in five of seven innings. Ryan Wolf and Gingerich each hit two-run home runs, while Hogan Heytvelt and Scott Slaybaugh each had three hits.

The sweep lifted Pomeroy's record to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in league.

For Colton, in game one, Peter Schultheis had two hits, while Chadwick hit a double and Reece Chadwick and Tom Wolf each got a base hit.

In game two, Schultheis and Reece Chadwick led the Wildcats at the plate, each with a double and a single. Cameron Bean had two hits along with Nick Schultheis and Kian Anderson.

A grand slam from Grant Kinzer in the seventh inning helped lift Colton over the Vikings at Garfield Tuesday night.

Trailing by a run in the seventh, Colton's Luke Vining hit a two-run single to put the Wildcats up by one. After two more batters, Kinzer, a senior, stepped to the plate and hit his first career grand slam. It was his third home run of the year.

Evan Weagraff led Gar/Pal with three hits in the game while Seth Thompson, Mason Bates and Blake Jones each had two.

Colton will open district playoffs May 9, following makeup games Thursday and Saturday.
