Pomeroy takes top seed into districts

The Pirates owned the regular season, and the 1B District Nine tournament begins this week with Southeast 1B teams vying for two spots in the state-subtournament.

Action begins Thursday, Feb. 9, with Oakesdale at Colton. The winner advances to play Waitsburg Saturday. Pomeroy, with a bye in the first round, will play Friday night at home.

The championship game will be Friday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Colfax followed by Saturday's last-chance second-place game at 7 p.m., also in Colfax.

Oakesdale 67

St. John/Endicott 59

Oakesdale picked up 23 points from Matt Hockett on its way to a win over the Eagles at St. John.

Cal Gregory added 16 points for the Nighthawks, and Kieron Anderson scored 11. Evan Henning had 10. Oakesdale went 19-of-26 from the free-throw line and outscored SJE 20-14 in the fourth quarter. The win finished off a sixth-place mark for Oakesdale in the Southeast 1B league.

For the Eagles, Adam Blakeley scored 18 points and Cooper Lundberg and Griffin Parrish both had 15.

Waitsburg 59

Pomeroy 55

The Pirates' 16-game winning streak and 13-game conference unbeaten run ended at Waitsburg Feb. 3. Pomeroy had already secured the league championship. Jake Tewalt led the team with 17 points while Oscar Morfin and Ryan Wolf both had 10. Jacob Dunn led Waitsburg with 14 points while Jordan Garrity had 10.

Pomeroy 68

Prescott 49

A night after its first loss in 16 games, Pomeroy returned to the win column as Jace Gwinn scored 28 points and Jake Tewalt added 16. Pomeroy will now start the District 9 tournament Saturday at home as the No. 1 seed.

Colton 60,

Oakesdale 50

Peter Schultheis delivered 18 points to lead the Wildcats at Oakesdale Feb. 4. Grant Kinzer added 15 points and 10 rebounds in the game as Colton pulled away from a tight game in the fourth quarter.

Reece Chadwick added 12 points for Colton.

Colton 53,

Gar/Pal 40

On Senior Night for Grant Kinzer, Brady Chadwick, Peter Schultheis, Nick Schultheis and Evan Ankerson, Colton beat Garfield/Palouse to avenge a January loss. Chadwick and Matt Wolf led the team with 12 points each. Daniel Orfe led the Vikings with 13 points while Blake Jones and Tanner Anderson each scored eight.
