Pomeroy beats Gar/Pal in OT, stays at top

Oakesdale senior guard Austin Rutledge drives the key against Pomeroy in a 68-54 loss.

After a nervous weekend, Pomeroy remains unbeaten in the Southeast 1B league. Garfield/Palouse took them to overtime last Friday night, and Oakesdale pushed them into the fourth quarter Saturday before the Pirates got control.

Now at 12-0, Pomeroy is followed by Waitsburg at 9-3 with a crowd vying for third; Garfield/Palouse, Prescott and Colton, all at 7-5.

Key games this weekend to help decide district seedings include Waitsburg at Pomeroy and Gar/Pal at Colton Friday.

Waitsburg 62

Colton 49

Playing at Waitsburg, Colton came up short Jan. 28 as Kyle Gradwohl scored 29 points for the Cardinals. The result reversed Colton's previous win over Waitsburg 89-50 Jan. 7 on a night that they shot 50 percent from the field. This time, Colton shot 30 percent.

Matt Wolf led the Wildcats with 17 points while Brady Chadwick added 16.

Pomeroy 68

Oakesdale 54

The Nighthawks hung tough against the unbeaten-in-league Pirates, leading at halftime as several Pomeroy starters sat out extended minutes in the second quarter.

In the third, Ryan Wolf and company returned to action but the game was still in doubt until into the fourth quarter. Wolf led Pomeroy with 19 points on the night while Cort LaMunyan had 11 and Jace Gwinn scored nine. Cameron Schell led Oakesdale with 15 points while Cal Gregory and Evan Henning each had nine.

St. John/Endicott 74

Touchet 60

Eagles' senior Adam Blakeley scored 34 points to lead the Eagles at home Jan. 28. Blakeley shot 12 of 17 from the field and made nine of 10 free throws. Cooper Lundberg scored 13 points for SJE.

Pomeroy 50

Garfield/Palouse 49

Pomeroy needed a constested scoop shot by Ryan Wolf and overtime to stay unbeaten in league in a home win over the Vikings. The defense proved key, too, as on the final possession of regulation and overtime, Pomeroy prevented Garfield/Palouse from getting a good look at the basket.

Wolf ended the game with 12 points while Jake Tewalt scored nine as Pomeroy extended its winning streak to 15 games. Mason Bates led Garfield/Palouse with 13 points while Blake Jones and Daniel Orfe each scored 10.

Colton 63, SJE 41

Forcing 20 turnovers, Colton's defense led the way in a Southeast 1B league home win Jan. 27. Matt Wolf led the Wildcats with 14 points while Parker Druffel had 11 and Grant Kinzer 10. Cooper Lundberg and Hunter Gingras paced the Eagles with 10 points each.
