Bulldogs bring 5-0 to Asotin

Colfax’s Carmen Gfeller goes up against Tessa Jantz of LRS for a big hit Saturday at home.

Colfax volleyball team will roll to Asotin today for a second-round match with a foe on the south side of the NE race. The Bulldogs will make the trip to the valley after stopping two NE foes last week.

Colfax took out Lind/Ritzville/Sprague in three games on the home court Saturday to advance its overall NE string to 5-0.

The win came after they rolled north to Liberty last Thursday and took that match in four games.

On the home court Saturday, the Broncos stacked an early lead in the first game, and it looked like a battle in the making.

"They just started out with a lot of good hitting, and we had to adjust to that," coach Sue Doering said.

She credited LRS senior Tessa Jantz with leading the early Bronco attack against Colfax.

"We eventually figured out where not to hit it and turned it around," Doering noted.

Line score for the home win Saturday was 25-18 25-6 and 25-11.

In the second game, Kylie Kackman had a run of serves off the line, and the Bulldogs pulled away to take control of the match.

Junior Carmen Gfeller hit 13 kills against the Broncos, and she and Kackman each served five aces. Kackman also had 25 assists and nine digs. She and Johanna Stolle each had a block.

Jantz finished with six kills and five aces for the Broncos.

Thursday at Liberty, the Lancers played Colfax tough and posted a game win over the Bulldogs in the third set.

"Liberty has a pretty good team with a lot of tough hitting," Doering commented. She added the Lancers' court pressure resulted in a lot of errors for the Bulldogs.

Colfax ripped a 25-11 score in the first game, but Liberty toughened up, and the Bulldogs etched out a 25-22 win in the second game.

Liberty took a 21-25 win in the third game, but Colfax reversed that score in the fourth game to take the match.

Gfeller had 20 kills and four blocks against the Lancers. She and Stolle each served three acres.

Kackman had 36 assists against Liberty, and Scout Cai had 20 digs. Christine Denny hit 10 kills for the Lancers.

Colfax will depart Friday for the two-day Sheridan Classic crossover tourney in Spokane. They will return home to host Tekoa/Rosalia Tuesday and Liberty Thursday during homecoming week.
