Gar-Pal comes back, takes two wins

Garfield-Palouse picked up two come-from-behind wins over the Colfax J.V. Tuesday night after splitting a doubleheader against Liberty Christian last week.

Playing at home in Garfield Tuesday, the Vikings (8-4 overall, 1-3 in league) trailed 5-2 in the seventh inning to Colfax when Mason Bates opened the eighth with a single followed by a double from Hunter Woltering. With two outs, Wyatt Griner delivered a triple followed by a single from Kaleb Schaub.

Then senior shortstop Cole Sanderson stepped to the plate and hit the game-winning RBI.

In the second game, Gar-Pal scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7. After Colfax scored once in the eighth to retake the lead, four Gar-Pal freshmen put together the winning rally.

Seth Thompson hit a single followed by a sacrifice bunt from Austin Marotto and a double from Daniel Orff. Evan Weagraff then hit a ground ball to the Colfax shortstop, who overthrew the first baseman. Marotto then scored the winning run.

On the mound for Gar-Pal, Hunter Woltering pitched the first five innings of the game, allowing six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Schaub pitched the final three innings to allow two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Last Friday, playing at home in the sun against Liberty Christian, Gar-Pal lost the first game 4-3. Sanderson, Woltering and K.C. Mitzemberg led at the plate with two hits each.

In the second game, an 8-4 win for the Vikings, Mitzemberg went 2 for 2, Wyatt Griner had three hits and Weagraff and Bates both posted two RBIs.

"I’m happy with the way the team is working," said Gar-Pal coach Jim Stewart. "It’s a great group of kids."

The team will play next at Pomeroy Saturday for a doubleheader.
