Final three league rounds to decide NE football fate

Davenport’s big Gorilla team will roll to Colfax Friday night to start a run of three football weeks which will spell out the Bulldogs fate in the Northeast 2B league. Now 6-0 in the league, Colfax will face a 5-1 Davenport team Friday, a now 6-0 Reardan team the next week, and a now 6-0 Lind/Ritzville/Sprague Bronco team on the last league round of the season which will be on Halloween Friday.

Colfax Coach Mike Morgan at the start of the season anticipated the league run would finish up in a mode he terms back-loaded. In addition to seeking the NE title, the four contenders will be shooting for the best slots in the crossover round Nov. 7 and 8 for one of four entry tickets to the state playoff campaign.

Davenport will arrive after getting a forfeit last week from the Tekoa/Rosalia Timberwolves who have opted to play jayvee rounds because of a loss of players to injuries. The lone Davenport NE loss came at the hands of the LRS Broncos, the defending champions.

Reardan Friday advanced to 6-0 with a 35-6 win over Springdale, and LRS advanced to 6-0 with a 14-0 win over the Liberty Lancers, a team which is picking up steam with a full roster after suspended players joined the fray.

Colfax will start the run of three games after a 54-7 win in a renewal battle at Kettle Falls. The Bulldogs stacked 28 points in the first quarter with three of the scores booked off conversions on interceptions.

Coach Morgan said the big difference was on the line where the Colfax front five dominated against a Kettle team that has been campaigning without the front line bruisers who have been a trademark of past Kettle teams from the north end of the league.

Kettle Friday finished with just 41 yards of total offense. They netted 33 yards on 41 rushing plays against the Bulldogs.

Colfax finished with 212 yards off 28 rushing attempts. They totaled 365 yards for the game. The Bulldogs booked those ground yards with Dylan Hall out of the action to rest a sore ankle.

Cody Fulfs scored five times in the first half with his last one coming off a 50-yard interception return.

Colfax defense had three interceptions the first half and scored on all three. Brian Stueckle made another grab and took it all the way to the three yard line where Fulfs punched it across the line.

Colfax offense moved to a 41-0 lead with seven minutes left in the half, and the clock moved to a quick time mode for the second half.

Brett Kincaid and the rest of the jayvee crew played the last two quarters. Kincaid hit TD passes to Caleb Brown and Christopher Jones during the jayvee half of the game.

Starting QB Mark Webber hit six of nine passes for one score, and Kincaid hit six of seven with the two scores in the second half.

Davenport Friday is expected to hit the local turf with the power running game which has been installed by Coach Justin Young. A lot of the Gorilla go power will be tied to senior Tommy Wilkie who was an NE all-leaguer last year. Wilkie stands 6-3 and weighs 215.

Coach Morgan noted Davenport will use crossing backs, and they like to pull linemen on sweeps and option plays which can build an escort of as many as five blockers.
