Softball teams wrap run at Pullman

Palouse Empire League softball season wrapped up last weekend with the junior and senior league teams playing two days of tournament action in Pullman. The playoffs had eight teams in the junior bracket for grades 3-5 and 10 teams in the senior bracket for grades 6-8.

Pullman Hounds One took the juniors with a 5-0 shutout over Colton/Uniontown to cap a three-win campaign. Hounds One defeated Genesee 9-5 in their first game and Colfax Diamonds 11-10 in the semi-final battle at the start of action Saturday.

Colfax Diamonds landed in third place after going through the consolation round. They advanced with a 10-0 shutout over Moscow in their first consolation game and then faced off with the Colfax Rebels in the next round.

The Diamonds prevailed 6-4 in the all-Colfax battle and then were stopped 5-1 by Colton/Uniontown. That left the Diamonds, who were coached by Tracy Imler and Pat Patnode, in third place.

The Diamonds went into the tourney after topping the regular league play with a 9-1 campaign.

The last consolation win moved Colton /Uniontown into the title game with Hounds One who took the 5-0 win for the championship.

Coached by Dan Brown, the Rebels finished in fourth place.

They started Friday with a 9-4 win over Hounds Two and were then stopped by Colton /Uniontown in the first round Saturday morning.

The semi-loss put the Rebels up against the Moscow Black team who they shutout 10-0 to face the Diamonds on the all-Colfax round in the consolation bracket.

In the senior bracket Genesee stopped the Colfax Bulldogs 9-5 to win the tourney title. The Bulldogs, who compiled an 8-2 mark on the regular season, went into the title game after being bounced by Genesee 9-8 in the semi-final round.

Coached by Michelle Miller, the Bulldogs nipped Kendrick/Juliaetta 8-7 in their first game and Garfield/Palouse 13-3 in their second game. They were then defeated by Genesee in the semi-round. After their semi-loss to Genesee, they edged Potlatch 7-6 to face Genesee again in the title game. The Genesee team started the tourney with a 9-0 record in the regular season.

The Bulldogs had 10 eighth graders on the team this year.

Carmen Gfeller led the Colfax bats with a 9-11 hitting mark for the tourney. Abbie Miller hit .600 in the series and Alicia Knee hit .500. Chelsea Becker hit 7-15 for the tourney and had a grand slam.
