1B, 2B track qualifiers roll to state finals

Final chapter for high school track will get underway when qualifiers from area B schools compete Friday and Saturday in state finals at Eastern Washington University. Action will start early Friday with the girls pole vault.

Qualification rounds wrapped up last Friday with the SE district finals at the University of Idaho. Fifteen competitors from Whitman County’s two combo teams qualified for the state 2B final and will join the Colfax qualifiers who qualified last week at the NE finals at Mt. Spokane.

Colfax Coach Jason Cooper said it is always difficult to predict how the points and placings will stack up. He noted the first order of business for the team will be to qualify for the state finals in the running events.

Colfax girls to date have dominated the NE track foes and some of their marks hold up well against the top postings around the state. The Bulldogs girls last year placed seventh in the team count.

Colfax girls have qualified all three of their relay teams for the state finals. Cooper noted the 4 X 400 team, which actually was put together in the middle of the season, now has the top team from with week’s entry lineup with a 4:14.

Colfax senior Bailey Mackleit also has top three standing in both the hurdle events and will run legs in the two sprint relay teams.

Josh Brown rates among the top three throwers in the state’s 2B division

Friday at Moscow, the top three finishers in the SE finals collected tickets to state. Darcy Stamper of LaCrosse booked another standout day with a 6-2 in the high jump and at 20-4.75 in the long jump, a mark almost 22 inches ahead of the number-two leaper.

Adam Blakeley, who knocked more than two seconds off his prelim time, qualified with a second in the 400.

St. John senior Heather Siegel qualified with a second in the 3200 to conclude her running career for the Eagles at state.

The SJE-LW relay team of Annie Bailey, Jade Porubek, Siegel, and Shania Bailey booked a third -place finish in the 4 X 400.

The win in the 4 X 400 was booked by the GP-TO team of Maddie Bogenrief, Zoe Robertson, Olivia Pakootas and Katie Holbrook. The Vikings also qualified with a third in the 4 X 200 with Suzanna Boersma, Melissa Groom Groom, Holbrook and Robertson.

Bogenreif booked second-place finishes in the 400 and the long jump, and Holbrook and Robertson also finished 2-3 in the 1600. Olivia Pakootas booked seconds in the high jump and the triple jump, and Gabby Israel qualified with a third in the javelin.

Drew Howard qualified for state with a third-place in the 400.
