Colton, Nighthawks on track for 1B title match

Colton and Tekoa/Oakesdale remained on track for another collision Friday in the championship round of the 1B sub-regional tournament at Colfax High School. The Wildcats hammered visiting Pomeroy 77-29 Friday in the semi round, and Tekoa/ Oakesdale turned back Touchet 62-41 in the other semi round.

Friday’s championship winner will get the first ticket to the state regional round which will cut the 1B field from 16 teams around the state down to eight for the state 1B show at Spokane.

Friday’s loser will be back Saturday to face the Friday consolation survivor for the other SE ticket to the state round of 16.

Wednesday the 1B tourney moved their action to Colfax to start 10-game stand of boys and girls games.

The two league leaders were idle last Wednesday when the 1B tourney launched at the St. John and Pomeroy, the higher seeded teams in the league standings.

Touchet upset SJE 57-39 to win Friday’s trip to Colton, and Pomeroy hammered Rosalia 45-33.

Friday at Colton the Wildcats stretched their win string to 21 games with a 77-29 romp over Pomeroy. Jenna Moser hit a tourney high 34 points in the semi win, and Zoe Moser hit 28.

At the top end of the county, Mattie Jo Johnson hit 27 for Tekoa/Oakesdale and Olivia Pakootas hit 15 in the 62-41 semi win over Touchet.

In the Tuesday rounds at Colfax, the SJE girls pegged a seven-point win, 42-35, over Pomeroy to remain in the hunt. The defeat ended the season for Pomeroy with a 16-7 record.

The Pirates actually had a 22-10 lead at the half, but the Eagles came back with Emily Jones leading the scoring with 12 points. The Eagles hammered Pomeroy 19-6 in the last quarter.

In the other elimination game Tuesday, Rosalia stopped Touchet with a four-point win, 66-62. with McKenzie Reddish hitting 29 points. The Spartans had a four-point lead after the first quarter, and that was the margin when the last buzzer sounded.

Touchet’s Cierra McKeown also hit 34 to tie the tourney’s high water mark set by Jenna Moser of Colton in the semi round,

Tuesday’s survivors at Colfax, SJE and Rosalia, will face off Friday afternoon at Colfax, and the winner will advance to the last girls game Saturday for the last ticket.
