Rosalia, St. John-Endicott to match up Friday night

One of the feature attractions for the second round of eight-man football this week will be the matchup between the revived Rosalia Spartan team and the St. John-Endicott Eagles.

The Spartans, who booked a 50-22 win in their opener at Cove, Ore., will visit an SJE team which posted at 62-16 win over Wellpinit.

Friday’s matchup will be a non-league round because Rosalia formed its team too late to get on the SE Eights league schedule. However, a win would help the Sparts stack the season percentage they need to get through the door of the first state playoff round.

Another matchup in the league will be a visit by the Colton Wildcats to Wilbur-Creston. Colton will make the trip after a big win at McCall in their opener last week. They will face a WC Wildcat team which powered past the LaCrosse-Washtucna Tigercats last week at Washtucna.

Colton beats Mullan 62-20; will play Wilbur-Creston Friday

Coach Clark Vining and the Wildcats will go to Wilbur-Creston Friday night after opening the season with a 62-20 crunch of Mullan Idaho on the Colton field Friday night. All that scoring came off 14 plays on offense.

Senior QB Jake Straughan, already committed to the Idaho Vandals hoops program, scored three TDs rushing with two of them on long runs against Mullan. He also connected on TD pass plays of 55 yards to Dalton Patchen and 81 yards to Dillon Frank.

Colton also picked up scores in interception returns by Levi Weber and Casey Jackson, two other seniors on the club.

The Mullan guests booked one score in the second quarter and two in the final quarter against the Colton reserves.

Coach Vining has seven seniors back for the SE Eights run this year. That kind of a lineup in the eight-man ranks can signal a big season.

After playing Wilbur-Creston in Friday's Wildcats vs. Wildcats non-leaguer, Colton will hit the road to Salmon River next week and then start league play against the Gar-Pal Vikings at Palouse.

St. John-Endicott wins big in opener

Last year they lost to them by a similar score on their way to a winless season.

This year, in the opening game, St. John-Endicott ran Wellpinit 62-14.

Senior running back Wade West led the way with 201 yards and six touchdowns.

"It feels real good to get the first game out of the way and get a win," said Eagles coach Steve Selk. "Our kids are more mature, more experienced this year. They came out and played really well."

St. John-Endicott threw almost no passes on the night, and led at halftime 42-8.

"If the ground game is working, I won’t hesitate to stay with it," said Selk.

In addition to West, junior running back Wilson Lundberg ran for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Selk pulled the varsity players in the third quarter.

"I think Wellpinit lost a lot of guys from last year," he said. "They were not the same team we faced a year ago."

St. John-Endicott will play again at home Friday night vs. Rosalia.

Selk will go into the game with minimal information about the Spartans, since this year is their first venture in 8-man football after many years playing in 2B 11-man as Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia.

The Spartans opened their season at Cove, Ore. last Friday for a 50-22 win.

L/W outgunned by Wilbur-Creston

LaCrosse/Washtucna Tigercats will make the long trip to Soap Lake Friday in search of their first win after sustaining a big loss at the hands of Wilbur/Creston in their home opener at Washtucna. Wilbur/ Creston scored 50 unanswered points in the first half against the Tigercats who were breaking in a new offense.

First year Coach Justin Ziebel credited the T-cats with getting on track in the second half and scoring twice to avoid a shutout.

Final score was Wilbur/Creston 58-LaCrosse/Washtucna 16.

"We went back to our old offense. We are familiar with it and we began to have some success," first-year Coach Justin Ziebel said.

Quarterback Joey Guske scored on a dive option for the first TD, and Stephen Erickson scored on 35-yard run for the other T-cat tally.

Wildcat QB Tristan Rossman hit six passes for TDs. Colton Magers had five of the TD catches.
