Serving Whitman County since 1877

Library supporters celebrate

Library supporters crowded into Endicott’s newly remodeled building as they celebrated May 30 with a grand re-opening.

The library underwent a complete renovation and was located in the city hall for more than a year. According to Whitman County Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick, the renovation cost $130,000 and was funded almost entirely from grants and donations.

She said raffles, auctions and other fundraising activities still are conducted to help fund a number of items that had to be cut from the project including a “wet” area for children’s crafts, a sign and an awning.

Kirkpatrick also said the Endicott Community Club played an integral role in fundraising for the renovation.

“They dedicated the club’s 2011 German dinner proceeds of $5,500 to the project,” she said in an email. “The club will also purchase ceiling fans that had to be eliminated due to cost overruns. The group is very active in funding a variety of community projects that really have a positive impact in that community.”

“Good things come to those who wait and boy, have we waited,” joked Endicott Mayor Vern Strader. “This is an exciting night for everyone.”

All kinds of books line the walls and shelves. Comfortable chairs surround tables and a small table and chairs are available for younger library patrons. Windows in the front let in plenty of light, making the library more inviting.

Strader said the building has a long history.

“It used to be a tavern, then a city hall,” Strader said. As he pointed to the back of the building, he said a jail cell used to be in the corner.

Strader said the building eventually began to deteriorate.

“It had mold issues, the roof leaked and there were lighting issues,” he said. “It really was kind of a mess.”

The whole process took such a long time that they realized they didn’t have enough money to complete all the plans but they forged ahead with the renovation.

Kirkpatrick welcomed visitors.

“This is your library,” she said.

She also recognized long-time librarian, the late Esther Helt, and the branch manager, Tia Langston.

A number of raffle and door prizes, along with silent auction items, were awarded.

Endicott Library hours are Tuesdays from 1 to 5 p.m., Fridays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with preschool storytime each Friday at 10 a.m.
