Ohio choir

sings tonight

at Washtucna

Washtucna Community Church will present a concert featuring the Ohio Northern University National Tour Choir tonight, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A freewill love offering for the touring group will be taken.

The Ohio Northern National Tour Choir is on a 38-day concert tour to 26 states during May and June. The choir consists of members of the ONU University Singers, the top choral ensemble at ONU, which tours annually. Most recently, in March 2012, the choir took its 11th international tour and presented concerts throughout the North Island of New Zealand. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Ben Ayling.

The concert will be in three sections and will open with a sacred segment beginning with Michael McGlynn’s processional “Media Vita” as sung by his Celtic group, Anuna. The choir will then present various styles of sacred literature, including “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl, a setting of “Psalm 23” with French horn, “Star in the East” arranged by Brad Holmes, Dawson’s “Balm in Gilead,” and several spirituals.

The second segment will include music of Africa, Norway, Ireland, Japan and Brazil.

The final segment of the concert will focus on American and contemporary offerings with music of George Gershwin, Stephen Foster and Eric Whitacre.

Clay workshops

set at Dahmen

Resident artist Carole Galloway June 28 will offer two free sessions for kids at the Dahmen Barn. Her specialty is working imaginatively and whimsically with FIMO clay. Her goal with these workshops is to spark the imagination of the students and have them successfully complete a finished product.

Galloway, who lives in Lenore, Idaho, will give basic instructions on how to work with FIMO, clay that comes in a wide variety of colors and is baked in a regular oven to cure. She will have the students make some sheep, then they can let their creativity fly on imaginary animals. These workshops are scheduled from 10:30 to noon, and 1 to 3. They are for children aged 6 to 12, with a maximum of eight per class to ensure individual instruction.

Registration deadline is June 23.

Creativity series

slated at Dahmen

The seventh annual Summer Creativity Series for children will begin July 11 and last for six consecutive Thursday afternoons, from 1 to 3:15, for children 6 to 12.

The sessions are led by practicing artists from the Palouse region. With the help of a grant from the U S Bancorp Foundation, Dahmen Barn is able to offer each afternoon for $12 per child.
