Webber wins solo contest

Colfax High School senior Lindsay Webber brought home a state championship from the WIAA state solo and ensemble contest at Central Washington University April 26-27. The contest is conducted by the Washington Music Educators Association.

Webber sang three songs and was awarded first place in the soprano division which includes schools of all sizes in the state. Unlike the WIAA sports, music events are not broken into different classifications based on school size. Soloists compete in six categories: soprano, mezzo soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass.

In addition, Webber and Katie Largent, a junior, scored three superior ratings for duets.

Largent and Erica Eng, a sophomore, also qualified and competed at the state contest. Erica sang as a mezzo soprano and Katie as an alto.

To compete at the state level, students must receive a superior award and place first at the regional contest which was at Pullman in February. According to the WIAA state program, 12,826 students performed in 2,584 ensembles and 5,005 students performed solos at the regional events.

The girls are all members of CHS choir under the direction of Cary Cammack who entered them in the contest, accompanied them at the piano and chaperoned at the regional and state contests. Erica is the daughter of Terry and Joanne Eng, Katie is the daughter of Gary and Lisa Largent and Lindsay is the daughter of Jon and Angie Webber.

The annual CHS Pops Concert May 21 will feature a selection of each of the girls’ state entries.

In addition, Lindsay will perform her entire state repertoire at her senior recital which is scheduled for May 19 at the CHS auditorium. Both events are open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
