Gar-Pal baseball team back at it after year out

Gar-Pal High School is back on the baseball field this spring after not being able to finish the season last year.

The Vikings have started with 3-4 record after a 12-1 win over the Asotin junior varsity Monday.

Wyatt Mitchell, Jesse Lopez and Cole Sanderson all had two hits in the game while Wyatt Griner pitched three innings, giving up one run on one hit with three strikeouts.

Lopez pitched the other two innings in the five-inning game (10-run rule), giving up no runs on one hit, with two strikeouts.

Last Thursday, the Vikings lost both games in a double-header at Liberty Christian. The first game was 13-0 as Lopez pitched three innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Griner pitched one inning to give up five runs on four hits.

In the second game, Hunter Woltering and Kaleb Shaub each pitched three innings. Woltering gave up six runs on six hits while Shaub allowed three runs on six hits.

At the plate, Shaub led Gar-Pal hitters on the day, going 3-for-6 with a double and two singles. In addition, Mitchell went 2 for 3 in the second game.

The Vikings will play next at Touchet Friday for a league doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.

“I think we’ve played pretty well at times, we’re a really young team,” said first-year coach Jeremy Kimble. “Most of the kids are freshman and sophomores. So I’ve been pretty pleased with the effort. It’s just gonna take more reps to get a better idea what’s going on.”

Last year’s 10-player Gar-Pal baseball team folded after just one double-header. A broken ankle that day and several players with conflicts led to the team having to wait until this year.

This spring, 13 kids are on the roster.

“We’ve got a good, solid group,” said Kimble. “Real dependable, the program is in no danger.”
