Wildcat girls resume perch atop 1B league

Colton’s Wildcats, one of three undefeated teams in the SE girls 1B race last week, resumed their exclusive perch atop the league with two solid wins over the weekend. Their first win was at Oakesdale Friday where the Wildcats ended the Nighthawks’ early league string.

Colton’s Payton Meyer and Paige Vincent (23) put the pinch on Hannah Sims as she tries to put one up from the paint Saturday night in Colton. The Wildcats rolled to their fifth straight win.

Colton wrapped up their pre-holiday stint at home Saturday with a big win over the Rosalia Spartans.

The Wildcats also received a boost at Touchet where the Indians, who started the week at 2-2, upset SJE to bump the Eagles out of the early season undefeated club.

Friday at Oakesdale, Colton stacked 43 points in the first half against the Nighthawks and finished with a decisive 70-36 win on their move to the head of the pack. The Wildcats hit 13 three-point shots against the Nighthawks with Jenna Moser dropping five of them. She finished the night with 21 points.

Payton Meyer pulled down 13 boards for the Wildcats who again cranked up the defense to hold the ‘hawks to just 14 points over the last two quarters.

Alex Overton, who zapped three outside bonus shots, topped the home team with 16 points.

Colton Saturday on their home court kept the defensive clamps on against the Spartans. Colton took the win 73-13.

Jenna Moser hit four more treys in the Saturday round and finished with 19. Sophomore Savannah Chadwick took advantage of an extended stint on the court for the Colton reserves and also finished with 19, including five three-pointers.

Saturday, the Nighthawks hosted and out-paced a young GP Viking team 73-13 at Tekoa. Olivia Pakootas hit 13 for a team high, and Courtenay Perry hit 11 with three treys.

Touchet finished a 2-0 weekend at home Saturday when they stopped SJE 46-39 to dent the Eagles’ early win string. The Eagles arrived at Touchet at 5-0 after a 43-42 power win over Liberty Christian Friday at Richland.

Touchet trailed 14-18 at the half, but claimed the lead in the third quarter. Cierra Jo McKeown booked a triple double for the Indians with 26 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals.

At Richland Friday, Gracie Dickerson led the Eagles with 11 points in the 42-23 win. The Eagles will go into a 2B mode this weekend with non-league road trips booked at Ritzville and Liberty. They face a big weekend when they return to league play after the holiday Jan. 4-5 by hosting the Nighthawks and then rolling to Colton.
