New all-league swim opener brings 111 racers to Colfax pool

Colfax swimmers took the team win Saturday in the all-team opener, a new event this year for the novice league. Coaches in the league decided to launch the season with an all-league event at Colfax before taking a break for the mid-week Fourth of July.

Colfax Coach Matt Ross said the new event brought in 111 of the 361 swimmers who have been registered by the league. Lone team to miss out on the opener was Dayton. The D club had booked only three practice sessions by last week and opted out.

Host Colfax, with 72 swimmers on the team, booked 470 points. Pomeroy, the defending champs from last August, totaled 351.5, St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse 325.5, Pullman 116, Garfield/Palouse 64 and Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia 29.

The league shut down for the holiday this week and then will begin the regular meet schedule through July. Next stop for Colfax will be Tuesday at Pullman.

“We really surprised ourselves,” Coach Ross commented on the Colfax performance. Jack Ross booked a sweep in the 14-under class and Gabe Ross booked a sweep in the 10-under.

Alexis Maki, in the 12 and under, and Abby Huber, a first year swimmer in the 10 and under, each took two events.
