Nine local duffers make day two

St. John/Endicott’s Michal Schuster earned a spot in the championship foursome after shooting a first round 88 at the state B golf championships on the Oak Brook Country Club at Lakewood Tuesday. The state finalists played the first round in the rain.

Final round cut the entries in half with 40 boys and 20 girls advanced.

Schuster was set to tee off after Gazette press time Wednesday in the noon grouping after shooting the third best girls score on the par-72 course.

Kasey Johnson of Colfax was the top area boy duffer after round one, shooting 83 for the sixth position.

Johnson led a contingent of Bulldog boys into second round play. Tyler Stevenson’s 86 was good for 12th place, and Kyle Johnson shot a 93 for the 30 slot. Colfax frosh Hunter Weitze, who won last week’s District 7 championship, shot a first round 95 for the 38 slot. Ryan Christopherson’s 104 was good for number 63.

Cole McCanna was the top scorer for the SJE boys, sharing the 30 spot with Kyle Johnson after shooting 93. Eagle Dakota White canned a 96.

In girls play, Sierra McCanna shot 106 for the Eagles for the 11 slot, Devan Bafus of SJE and Paige Mackleit of Colfax each finished at 108 to qualify for the second day.

Ryan Baumgart of DeSales staked top position after first round play boys with a one-over par 73. Defending state champion Kira Powell of Odessa/Harrington led the girls side with a first round 85.
