Book sale launches on St. Patrick’s day

Friends of Whitman County Library will sponsor a St. Patrick’s Day book sale beginning today, Thursday, March 17, at 10 a.m. in the Colfax Library. All proceeds benefit library programs and services in all 14 library branches. Last year, Friends of Whitman County Library contributed nearly $15,000 in support of storytime, summer reading, special guest performers and more.

Sale coordinator Becky Lawhead said extra tables will be used to accommodate hundreds of new items being sold. This special sale will run until all items are gone.

As always, Troll’s Corner book sale is stocked with books, music and movies for sale.

Cowgirls at Dahmen

Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band from Winthrop will play at the Dahmen Barn March 25 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The award winning western trio features harmony, musicianship and stage commentary. Winners of Western Music Association’s 2009, “Best Harmony Trio of the Year” and “Crescendo Award,” they bring audiences along the trail of the American Western experience with traditional cowboy music.

Athenaeum Club will meet March 18 in the Whitman County Library at 1 p.m. The hostess will be Sharon Baum and Pauline Gebhardt will give the program on daffodils.

Newton son born

A boy, Cameron Charles, was born March 9, 2011, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Shaylee and Philip Newton. Maternal grandparents are Steve and Karin Meye, Ritzville, and the late Kathy Neilson. Paternal grandparents are Ron and Carol Newton, Ritzville. Weighing seven pounds, 10 ounces at birth, he is the couple’s first child.

Lewis girl born

A daughter, Alivia Leann, was born March 14, 2011, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Nicole and Justin Lewis. Maternal grandparents are Jeff Blakeley and Chris Hasse. Paternal grandparents are Dan and Cheri Lewis. Weighing six pounds, 13 ounces, the baby joins siblings Avery and Ellouise.

LECTURES

The WSU department of Women’s Studies has named internationally renowned artist Juane Quick-to-See-Smith as the 2011 Jo Hockenhull Distinguished Visiting Lecturer for 2011. Smith will give a lecture titled “A Survey of Contemporary Native American Art,” at 6 p.m. March 30 in Kimbrough Hall, room 101, with a reception immediately following.

A painter, print-maker, artist, activist and curator who has organized contemporary native exhibits for more than 30 years, Smith was born in 1940 at the St. Ignatius Indian Mission in Montana on the Flathead Reservation. She is an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation.

Smith has been a guest lecturer at more than 185 universities, museums and conferences around the world. She serves as a spokesperson and activist for contemporary Native American art. Her work is featured in many collections including: the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C .; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Mankind, Vienna, Austria, and many other prominent galleries around the globe.

Smith earned her Bachelor’s in Art Education from Framington State College, Massachusetts, and Master’s in Art from the University of New Mexico. She has been awarded four honorary doctorates.

The lecturer series began in 1996-1997 in honor of Jo Hockenhull, a WSU professor emerita of fine arts. She served as director of Women’s Studies for more than a decade.

ART

WSU Museum of Art showcases the talents of Seattle artist Claudia Fitch in an exhibition from Jan. 13 to April 2, “Claudia Fitch: Works 1987-2010” will feature sculptures created by the artist to play with images from popular culture, including vernacular architecture and decorative statuary. Fitch works intuitively from what she calls a “junk pile” of visual materials culled over the years.

Fitch has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Washington and a master’s of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

UI Prichard Art Gallery exhibit: “John Wood, On the Edge of Clear Meaning” Feb. 21-April 9, a visual studies workshop traveling exhibition.

MUSIC

The Pan African Drum and Dance Ensemble will present music and dance from West Africa Tuesday, March 22, at 8 p.m. in WSU’s Kimbrough Concert Hall. The free concert is sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity; the Visual, Performing and Literary Arts Committee; and WSU School of Music. The performance draws on traditions from Mali, Ghana, Senegal and Guinea.

In addition to the concert, the ensemble will offer two dance workshops. Djeneba Sako will teach a Malian Dance class 4-5:50 p.m. March 21, at the WSU Dance Studio in Daggy Hall. Maputo Mensah will teach a Ghanaian dance class 6-7:30 p.m. March 23 at the Spectrum II Art and Dance Studio in Moscow. Admission to the workshops will be $15 at the door.

Randy Suess will present “Customs, Cultures and Customers” an interactive presentation of his trip to Yemen, Eritrea, and Egypt on Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. at the Colfax Library.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational series designed to provide in-home caregivers with the tools they need to also care for themselves. Classes consist of six sessions held once a week in the Colfax Library every Wednesday from 5:30-7 p.m. Two experienced class leaders, who’ve been caregivers themselves will lead the interactive sessions, discussions and brainstorming. You will receive The Caregiver Handbook for a suggested donated of $25 but it is not required to attend the class.
