Bulldogs on course for collision to cap round

JJ Robinson, Andy Scholz and Alex Teade all stretch for a rebound Friday night in the Bulldogs-Chargers battle at Colfax.

Colfax boys pegged two solid wins over the weekend to extend their league string to five games. The Bulldogs aim to add wins Friday night at Ritzville and Saturday night at home against St. George’s. Wins in the two weekend games would set up a potential battle of the league undefeateds when Northwest Christian arrives here Tuesday to wrap up the first round of Bi-County league play.

Northwest Christian remains undefeated in league play at 6-0 with a 66-39 win over the LRS Broncos Tuesday at Ritzville. The Crusaders hammered Lakeside 72-33 in a non-leaguer Saturday at Colbert.

Ritzville is now 3-4 in the league campaign.

Colfax Friday took out Mary Walker of Springdale in a high speed game on the home court. Saturday they topped Liberty 47-37 to run their league mark to 5-0.

Springdale Friday night hit the Colfax court at high speed, but the Bulldogs managed to step it up and take control after the first quarter.

“It was a fast-paced game, but we managed to adjust,” Coach Reece Jenkin said.

He credited the Colfax defense led by JJ Robinson with keeping the cap on the Chargers. Colton Peone, who recently transferred to Mary Walker from Deer Park where he has lit up the nets, was held to nine at Colfax.

Colfax made good use of a size advantage on the inside with Andy Scholz hitting all six of his shots.

The Bulldogs also out-boarded the Chargers by 10.

Brandon Gfeller sank a trio of three pointers in leading Colfax scorers with 18 beans.

Saturday at Liberty the Bulldogs and Lancers locked up in a physical game which left the Bulldogs playing below peak level.

“It’s nice to know you can play in a game like that and still come out with a 10-point win,” Jenkin said.

One top mark for Colfax was the 31 turnovers they picked off the Lancers.

“We were able to really put the pressure on them,” Jenkin said.

Gfeller and Robinson led the Bulldogs with 15 points each.

Coach Jenkin said the team hopes to get Justin Berarducci back in the lineup over the coming week. Berarducci has been sidelined with an ankle injury since before the trip to the SunDome during the Christmas break.

Other league play Saturday saw Davenport top Springdale 88-75, and Reardan top St. George’s 50-37.
