Eight-man teams face variety of 3rd week foes

Whitman county teams in the SE Eights league will face a variety of foes Friday in the last week of non-league action.

COLTON and Joseph, Ore., have booked another Friday night game in the Kibbie Dome at the University of Idaho. The Oregon club will arrive with a 1-1 record after losing 74-53 derby to Ione, Ore., last week. They posted a win over the Echo club which will be at Washtucna this week.

Coach Clark Vining notes for the first time this year the Wildcats won’t be going up against a state championship team from last year. They bowed to Tri-Cities Prep, the state 1B champs who will play in 2B this year, and Salmon River, the Idaho champs in their division. Salmon, which brought 15 players to Colton last Friday, went back to Riggins with a 38-26 win for a 2-0 mark against Whitman clubs at the start of the new season.

The Savages moved out to a 32-6 lead, but Colton charged in late.

Jake Straughan had two TD catches on passes from his brother Josh and Steve Eacker had two more TD catches.

QB Josh Straughan booked a 33-43 night passing for 450 yards. Eacker had 16 catches for 243 yards, Holdan Druffel 7-104 and Taylor Spence 6-53.

LaCROSSE/WASHTUCNA bowed to the new Odessa-Harrington Titans combo 40-20 in their home opener at Washtucna Friday. The Tigercats and Titans played to a 20-14 score at the half, but OH stacked up the scores in the last two quarters.

The young Tigercats team cranked out 400 yards of offense, and Coach Jeff Nelson expects the club to settle down into the slots and go for a win this week when Echo, Ore., comes to Washtucna.

The Tigercats scored first on a 74-yard pass play from Jacob Aune to Sawyer Hostetler. Caleb Hannas, who booked a 21-125 night rushing, rambled for a 62-yard escape for the second score before the break.

Last TD for the hosts was a 30-yard shot from Aune to Sam Harder in the third quarter.

Echo will arrive at the ‘tucna turf after sustaining a 6-34 loss to Cove, Ore., last week. The Oregon team likes to run a triple option offense.

GARFIELD/PALOUSE will have their home opener Friday against an Almira-Coulee-Hartline team which blanked Columbia-Inchelium 38-0 Friday to move to a 2-0 record. Derek Issaak passed for 221 yards and five TDs to lead the Warriors.

The Vikings Friday pulled off their own shutout, a 42-0 crunch in their official eight-man opener at Selkirk.

The Vikings rolled out 362 yards on the ground. They posted a 20-0 lead at the break and stacked 22 more points on three TDs in the second half.

Riley Hodges, who finished 17-174 rushing, opened the scoring with a plunger at the end of a drive. He escaped for 67 yards for the second TD. J.B. Lange booked 18-106 for the night and scored twice.

Garfield/Palouse defense shut down Selkirk for most of the night.

ST. JOHN/ENDICOTT will take their 1-0 record to Harrison Flats on the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene and play a Kootenai Warrior team which edged Lakeside of Plummer 40-36 last week. The Eagles had a bye last week.

The Warriors have a 3-1 record on the Idaho season. They were led by Branden Carmen who passed for 227 yards against the Knights.
