Garfield UMC starts ‘living fully’ series

The “Living Fully-Dying Well” series sponsored by Garfield United Methodist Church Garfield, will begin next Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.

This is a video and workbook series developed by United Methodist Bishop Rueben Job. The workbook costs $10. To have a workbook available at the first session, call Pastor Peggy Ray at Pullman. peggyray@pullman.com

Topics for the series are Wednesday, Sept. 15-Living Fully; Sept. 22-A Theology of Aging; Sept. 29-Finding Purpose and Meaning in Life; Oct. 6-Dying Well and Oct. 20-How Then Shall We Live?

Xenodicans at Palouse

Palouse Xenodican Club book sale will be Sept. 18 during Palouse Days in the Palouse Library from 8 to 2. They will also sell their famous funnel cakes in front of the library following the Palouse Days Parade. The library “Spin the Wheel” game and balloons will be available for kids with adult permission.

Palouse artist Margo Wekenman has her work on display until Oct. 8. The library is open Tuesdays 11 to 6, Thursdays 2 to 6 and Fridays noon to 6.

Honns will mark 50th

Larry and Charlotte Honn, long-time Winona area ranchers, will be honored on their golden wedding anniversary with a no-host dinner Saturday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. at Eddy’s Restaurant in Colfax. Honn and Charlotte Evans were married Sept. 10, 1960. They have two children, Larry Honn, Jr., Winona, and Crystal Honn, Monterey, Calif., and one grandson.

Patchin’ People, a Pullman quilters’ group, meets Monday, Sept. 13, 1 to 3 p.m. in Concordia Lutheran Church, 1015 NE Orchard St. All who are interested in quilting are invited. Sandy Berg will present a program on “Development of Patterns.”

Morgan granddaughter born

A daughter, Kayla Grace, was born Sept. 1, 2010, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, to Ben and Rachel Kovanda of Pullman. Maternal grandparents are Alan and Cathy Morgan, Colfax. Paternal grandparents are Kerry and Nadeen Kovanda, Columbus, Mont. Maternal great-grandparents are Marshall and Lucile Miller and David and Virginia Morgan, all of Colfax. Paternal great-grandmother is Lydia Marten, Columbus, Mont. Weighing five pounds, 11 ounces at birth, she is the couple’s first child.

Wicklund girl born

A daughter, Evelyn Ann, was born Aug. 31, 2010, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Leanne and Phillip Wicklund. Maternal grandparents are Dick and Sharon Hall, Moscow. Paternal grandparents are Betty Jean Ponce, Surprise, Ariz. Weighing seven pounds, 13 ounces at birth, the baby joins siblings Josie, Jazzy, Gage and Leon.

A Fine Arts Faculty Focus Exhibition featuring works by Ross Coates will be Aug. 26 to Sept. 25 at the WSU Museum of Art with an opening reception Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. followed by an artist walk-through at 7 p.m.

Coates was chair of the fine arts department, teaching from 1976-1987 and served as interim museum director 2001-02. His art reflects the notion of life as a journey, finding bits and pieces, creating collages, constructions and paintings that mirror his fascination.

EXHIBITS

“Nature Twice,” a special exhibit of poetry about animals and nature, in the Conner Museum of Natural History will be Sept. 9-Nov. 21 on the WSU campus.

The exhibit is free and open to the public 8 to 5 p.m. daily in Abelson Hall on the ground floor. An opening poetry reading and reception will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in Abelson Hall, room 201.

“Nature Twice” explores diverse perspectives of animals and natural history through the work of several well-known poets. The poems provide personal views of animals and the relationships between people and the natural world.

Poets Linda Russo, WSU assistant professor of English, and Ray Hanby, a WSU graduate, will read from their recent works.

Meet the Artist kicks off Thursday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. with quilter, Margaret Miller. Miller will share techniques and samples of her work in the meeting room of the Colfax Library, which is now accessible by elevator. Don’t miss this special opportunity sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Colfax Arts Council.

Join Whitman County Library at the Palouse Empire Fair this week. For kids, the library booth features the free and ever-popular spinning wheel of prizes. An entirely new selection of historic images from the Rural Heritage Collection will also be on display. The booth is sponsored by the Friends of WCL.

The Colfax Library will host the Colfax Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, Sept 21, at noon. The library will provide the program while a complimentary luncheon is provided through grant funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. If you would like to attend, please R.S.V.P. to Kristie Kirkpatrick by Sept. 13.

The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss is the featured book for this year’s Everybody Reads celebration. Everybody Reads encourages residents from the entire community to read the same book facilitating discussion and commonality. To culminate the Everybody Reads event, Gloss will speak in the Colfax and St. John Libraries on Nov. 12.

Fall brings a return to children’s programming at the Colfax Library. Preschool storytimes begin Thursday, Sept. 16, with Babytime at 10:10, Toddler Time at 10:30 and Preschool Time at 11:00.

Library Pajama Storytime also returns on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. for an encore presentation under the tree in Hayden’s Corner. Kids will hear great stories, sing songs and find great books to take home. For questions about children’s programs, contact Sheri or Nichole.

wins teen read tickets

For St. John’s adult/teen summer reading more than 24 people turned in at least three short reviews and received a free drink from Maggie Lynn’s or ice cream from the Last Straw. Carmen Swannack won the teen drawing for a sprint boat prize pack. Karen McCue won the adult drawing for a Pamper Yourself pack provided by local businesses.

Storytime at the St. John Library resumed Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. for children 7 and under. This year Librarian Clancy Pool will lead children through the alphabet with each letter having its own special day.

Halloween will be the theme of the first Second Monday Club session Oct. 11. Students in grades 1-4 meet after school for an hour of crafts, a light snack and book talks.

St. John Library hours are: Mondays, 10:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesdays 3 to 5:30 and Friday from 9 to 1 and 2 to 5.

Storytime at Colton

Storytime sessions at the Colton Library will resume Monday, Sept. 13. with the focus this month on seasons. Children age 1-6 are invited to join the fun Mondays at 10:30 a.m.
