Colfax relay team snares lone Whitman win in 2B track finals

Colfax’s 4x100 meter girls relay team was the lone title brought back to Whitman County from last weekend’s 2B state track championships held at EWU’s Woodward Field.

The team of Amelie Bruya, EB Hatley, Hannah Harazin and Kayla Johnson clocked a 51.53 in the 4x100 final to come in a half second ahead of second place La Salle. The same team finished second in the 4x200 relay.

Bulldog Sophomore Morgan Willson turned in a solid state showing, but could not outduel rival Mikel Elliot of White Pass, a senior, in the distance races. Willson booked second place showings in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 with times of 2:23.93, 5:16.19 and 11:12.91, respectively.

Powered by its relays and Willson’s silver showings, the Colfax girls team followed last year’s championship with a second place finish. The girls racked up 51 points, two behind champ Pe Ell.

Colfax 4x400 relay team of Reagan Lowe, Megan Pearson, EB Hatley and Morgan Willson finished in fifth place with a 4:22.21. The showing in the 4x400 pushed the ‘dogs team score two points ahead of eventual third place White Pass.

Warren Miller of St. John made his presence known in his final appearance at the Cheney show.

The Eagle senior placed second in the high jump, sixth in the triple jump and 15th in the long jump.

Grant Schultz of Reardan broke up an all Whitman finals in the boys high jump. A crowd of county spectators lined the rails to watch Miller, Scott Eberle of Rosalia and Justin Beraducci of Colfax leap the bar.

In the end, Schultz bested them all with a 6-7 jump. Miller came in second at 6-6 and Beraducci ended at 6-2. Eberle finished at 6-1, but came in at fifth as Rueben Clark of Spokane’s Northwest Christian cleared the mark in one less jump.

Miller last year won the 1B high jump title with a leap of 6-4. Schultz also hit 6-4 last year to claim the 2B title.

Junior sprinter Chad Redman of Palouse booked second place in the 300 hurdles with a 41.09, behind Jeffrey McClelland of Mount Vernon Christian. Redman also qualified for the finals of the 110 hurdles, but was disqualified after a false start in the finals.

Kayla Johnson of Colfax ran a 17.16 for fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles. Her time in the 300 hurdles prelims didn’t quite qualify her to advance to the final.
