Tracksters book strong marks despite cold, rain

Wind and rain greeted tracksters from nine schools Tuesday when the local season opened up on the Schmuck Park track at Colfax. Sprinters and hurdlers had a strong wind at their backs down the stretch, but middle distance and distance runners had to cope with grueling conditions on the back half.

Colfax Coach Jason Cooper, who was called to Wenatchee by a family emergency at the start of the week, credited assistants Mark Brown and Jennifer Fulfs with putting the big meet together with the help of a host of volunteers.

Justin Berarducci goes up for the Bulldogs in the high jump. He and Grant Schultz of Reardan tied for second place at 6-0 behind the win by NWC's Rueben Clark who cleared 6-4.

“What we really had with nine teams was a mini invitational, and they really pulled it out for us,” Coach Cooper said.

Kayla Johnson and Morgan Willson each pegged double wins for the Bulldogs. Wilson rolled off big wins in the 3200 and the 1600, and Johnson won both hurdle events.

The Colfax 4 X 100 relay team clocked a 53.0 to get within range of their state winning time last year with Hannah Harazin and Amelie Bruya taking the two vacated spots this year.

Marshall Fryberger of Lind/Ritzville, defending state champion, clears 13-0 in an early season demo for the pole vault. Fryberger topped the number-two vaulter by three and one half feet.

Colfax girls 4 X 400 relay team also took a win with Kim Heiner, Reagan Lowe, Deanna Aeschliman and Morgan Willson running legs. Heiner subbed in for EB Hatley who took a spill in the 4 X 200 relay.

Freshman Brandon Gfeller won the 300 hurdles, his debut entry in that event. He also placed second in the 110 hurdles.

The Colfax boys 4 X 400 team clocked a win at 3:51 with Jay Hart, Justin Berarducci, Damon Buck and Gfeller. Buck also placed second in the 200.
