Spartans keep rolling with big wins

Lee Roach of the Vikings wraps a rebound in front of Justin Bingman of Pomeroy in the boys battle Friday at Palouse.

Colton's Taylor Spence lands a rebound under a leaping Cole McCanna in the Eagle-Wildcat battle Tuesday.

Rosalia’s hoop steamroller added two District 9 games by a combined margin of 63 points to push its record to 17-0. The Spartans demolished visiting Touchet 66-44 Saturday after dropping the LW Tigercats at Washtucna Friday.

Rosalia roared out of the gate at home Saturday, posting 23 points in the first quarter and then clamped down on the Indians the rest of the way. Touchet hit just two buckets in the second quarter.

Rosalia’s inside prowess powered the Spartans to a 75-34 blowout over LaCrosse/Washtucna Friday at Washtucna.

The Spartans dominated the offensive glass, with Jim Maley and Nathan Richards capitalizing on put-back chances to combine for 35 points.

Austin Summers led LW with 10 points. Tigercat gunner Jeff Zimmer was sidelined with foul trouble and finished with just two points.

Garfield/Palouse guard Gavin Burt continued his scorching play and nailed a triple-double in the Vikings’ 73-56 win over host Potlatch Tuesday.

Burt racked up 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the win. Blake Slocum and J.B. Lange each contributed 12 points and Lee Roach came up with 11.

St. John/Endicott notched its first league win Tuesday with a balanced scoring attack that posted a 61-49 win over visiting Colton.

The SJE front line of Warren Miller and Dylan Schmick put up 15 points apiece and limited Colton’s sophomore center Dustin Patchen to just eight points.

The Wildcats, led by Josh Straughan’s 14, held tough through the first two and a half quarters, but the Eagles socked the game away with a 25-point fourth quarter charge.

Eight Eagles hit the scorebook.

The Vikings’ smothering defense held off a Dayton team Saturday night in Columbia County. GP’s D came up big after intermission, turning a two-point halftime lead into a 64-52 victory.

Burt’s 20 points were tops amongst scorers.

Friday, Steven Griffin hit two key treys in the final minutes for his only points of the game to give Garfield/Palouse enough of a cushion to withstand late-charging Pomeroy 46-40 at Palouse.

Burt again led the Vikes with 17 points on offense, and Garrett Pfaff pestered the Pirates on the other side of the court with eight steals.

LaCrosse/Washtucna shook off an ice-cold first half and found the hot spots in the Sprague gym late Tuesday night and downed Sprague/Harrington 46-42. The T-Cats tallied just two points in the first quarter, but tightened the D and found an offensive groove after halftime, outscoring the Falcons 37-17 in the second half.

Jeff Zimmer paced the Tigercats with 20 points, 18 of which came after the break.

St. John/Endicott hung tough with defending state champion Tri-Cities Prep through the first 16 minutes, but ran cold in the second half and fell 50-36 at Pasco.

The game was tied 15-all at the break, but the Jaguars, led by Will Hoppes’ 23 points, outscored the Eagles by 12 points in the third quarter. Dylan Schmick led SJE with 10 points, and Cole McCanna added nine.

Warren Miller led three Eagles in double figures Friday night in St. John/Endicott’s 57-50 win over visiting Asotin. Miller finished with 15 points, with Dylan Schmick chipping in 11 and Ben Harrison adding 10.

Colton Friday rode Dustin Patchen’s 24 points as the Wildcats cruised past visiting Tekoa/Oakesdale 67-52. Patchen out-dueled Nighthawk Brandon Hovde in a match-up of pivot players. Hovde finished with 21.

Drake Hinkins and Earl Gaines came up big for Tekoa/Oakesdale Monday night, but the dynamic duo could not hold off visiting Walla Walla Valley Academy, falling in overtime 69-65.

Hinkins ended with 24, and Gaines finished with 21 for TO.

Saturday night the Nighthawks traveled to Richland and made the long trip back with a 78-46 loss to Liberty Christian.

TO opened fast, staking an 18-12 lead after one, but the Pats erupted out of the halftime locker room to put the game away with a 33-point third quarter.

Hinkins topped the ‘hawks with 13 points. LC’s Jeremy Siefken led all scorers with 28.
