Pomeroy previews Cluckey Cup power

Pomeroy last Thursday rolled out a preview of their 2009 pool power which makes Pirate strokers a heavy favorite to keep the Cluckey Cup Saturday. Coach Shelly Slaybaugh and her team will be shooting for a third straight win in the novice league meet.

Swimmers from seven teams will assemble at the pool Saturday for the season’s finals, the 44th editions of the Knights of Columbus Jerry Cluckey Memorial meet. New to the lineup will be the Pullman team from Reaney Park which has been campaigning on the circuit for the first time this year.

Pomeroy last Thursday rolled up 319 points in a four-team meet at Colfax.

Scout Cai of Colfax put a dent in the Pirate run last Thursday when she posted five wins in the 12-under class. Emmylou Gregg of Garfield/Palouse swept the four individual races in girls eight-under and Katie Renstrom of GP posted three wins in the 14-under class.

Pomeroy Coach Slaybaugh has 76 swimmers on her roster this year with many of them veterans from last August when the Pirates ruled the event by rolling out 416.5 points in their first title defense.

One footnote for the meet this year will be the entry of Simon Brannan, son of Gabe and Megan Carr Brannan with the Pullman team. Simon is a great-grandson of the late Jerry Cluckey, founder of the county meet which was later named in his honor.
