    The State Department of Natural Resources Sept. 25 issued a report that it had rescinded the statewide burning ban on DNR protected lands in the state. Recent rainfall and moderating temperatures led to the decision. The DNR action does not affect restrictions by local authorities, and fire bans are still in place in all county parks. More precipitation will be required here, and the department will review long-range forecasts before lifting the bans in the parks.     Public Disclosure Commission listings for Whitman County candidates show three of the four candidates in the two contested races opted to comply with the mini reporting option in which they pledged not to spend more the $5,000 on their campaigns after paying the filing fee and will not accept more than $500 from any one contributor. Jim Hawkes, the staff appraiser who is challenging incumbent Joe Reynolds for the assessors job, opted to take the full reporting option.     The city of Palouse has a renewed rating for firefighting capability after an evaluation by the Washington Survey and Ratings Bureau. The review process takes into account a town’s ability to respond to a fire, then concludes with a rating on a scale of 1-10 — which can affect homeowners’ insurance rates.   • Tekoans seek Empire Theater listing on National Register

    Tekoa’s Empire Theater could soon be listed on the National Register of Historic Places if an effort by local citizens earns approval. Diane Harp, a member of the Empire Theater committee, took information to the city council Sept. 20 to show her efforts on behalf of the listing.   • Dr. Greg Aune named to serve on cancer research advocates panel

    Dr. Greg Aune of San Antonio, Texas, a Colfax High School graduate whose research work in Texas was recognized with a fund drive exercise at the high school here, has been nominated by the National Cancer Institute to be a new member to its Council of Research Advocates. Aune is a pediatric hematologist-oncologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
