The National Lentil Festival announced the winners of the 2012 Legendary Lentil Cook-Off held Saturday during the festival. First place was the French Cassoulet with Lentils, Bacon, Sausage and Chicken Confit by Lily Julow of Gainesville, Fla. The need for blood doesn’t take a summer vacation! The summer months traditionally reflect a lower turnout of donors due in part to high schools and colleges being out of session. They account for almost 35 percent of all blood donations. This combined with the fact that donors are busy with summer activities, creates a greater need during the season. 8 years ago August 26, 1887 Last Saturday, the county commissioners decided on the location of the new court house and adopted the plans of the county building at Dayton, Columbia County, one of the prettiest and most substantial in the territory. Lots have a total frontage of 175 feet and extend back 154 feet. They were purchased from O.L. Wolford and Livingstone and Kuhn. The Garden of the Month award for July went to Dave and Cathy St. John’s garden just a few short miles south of Rosalia. The selection committee reported several memory gardens within the garden with an ongoing pond project. Billy Willy’s pond, a memory pond for Cathy’s dad, has six koi and two bottom feeders to keep the algae out. Several water garden plants are planted around the pond. This is the highest achievement recognized by the National FFA Organization. Less than one-half of one percent of all FFA members earn this achievement. Julie Aune Kincaid is right at home on a farm near Colfax, as the daughter of a LaCrosse area family. Parents Bud and Judy Aune welcomed Julie after having three boys, so she learned to do her homework at her brothers basketball games and was exempt from truck driving during harvest; her mother claimed her for cooking help. Ruth Enos of Colfax has a role in the production of Oliver which begins a run at the Regional Theater of the Palouse in Pullman tonight, Thursday. A veteran of several musical productions, Enos is cast as Mrs. Bedwin, the housekeeper in act two. She sings the reprise to “Where is Love.” Owen McGreevy and Kimball Cordoba of Pullman play Oliver. Katelyn Graffis has been awarded a general university scholarship for $1,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year at Eastern Washington University. Katelyn graduated from Oakesdale High School in 2010. She was an assistant at the Oakesdale learning center and played on Nighthawk basketball and volleyball teams. She received an associate degree in elementary education from Spokane Falls Community College where she also received the SFCC presidential medal for graduating with an all-A grade average.... Swing dance at Dahmen Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will host country swing dance and free lessons Friday, Aug. 31. Lessons begin at 6:15; the dance begins at 7:30. In a meeting with representatives from Oakesdale, Rosalia, Garfield and Palouse Aug. 14, WSU Athletic Director Bill Moos announced that the university is going to promote alternate routes to football games. They are creating a map to encourage fans to take the byways instead of relying on Highway 195 for southbound travel to games. Cars and trucks were backed up Main Street from Fairview north to JJ Building Supply Friday afternoon as construction crews limited traffic on Highway 195. Returning WSU students added to the Colfax traffic load with foosball tables and futons sticking out of the beds of pickup trucks. Changes to Whitman County zoning laws that would allow development of natural gas power plants will be the topic of a public hearing before county commissioners Sept. 10.
