    Army Master Sergeant Mitch Kriebel is backin Whitman County this week, walking 113.2 miles for the Ruck for the Fallen. Kriebel, a Garfield/Palouse graduate, had already done walks with a ruck sack attached to honor fallen soldiers at Steptoe Butte, Washtucna to LaCrosse, and Endicott to St. John this week and began today at Rosalia headed for Tekoa.   • Disabled combine blocks traffic

    A Case combine pulling a header backed up traffic Wednesday afternoon more so than usual. A report of a disabled combine was logged just before 4 p.m. in the southbound lane of Highway 195 north of the Chevron station in Colfax. According to Colfax chief Bruce Blood, the combine was disabled for about 45 minutes due to a broken belt which was replaced on-scene.     After about three hours of delib- eration, a Whitman County jury Thursday found Phillip Hayes guilty of one count of Drive-By Shooting, a class B felony, one count of Reckless Endangerment, a gross misdemeanor and one count of Reckless Driving, also a gross misdemeanor. Hayes, who lives outside Lamont, was alleged to have drove past a farm shop and recklessly fired a .44 handgun, striking a pickup near the shop.     Washington governor Jay Inslee announced Thursday a new 10-person limit on social gatherings, beyond the members of a household, for counties in Phase three of reopening – which includes Whitman County. The previous cap was 50. The new limit does not apply to church services, weddings, funerals, businesses operating indoor or retail stores. The new restrictions begin Monday.     TEKOA - The Whitman County Sheriff's Office has credited the assistance of landowners and citizens in bringing a quick resolution to a recent alleged crime.     A former employee of The Bookie has been sentenced in District Court for two counts of theft third degree. Melissa Abrams was originally charged in Superior Court with two counts of unlawful issuance of checks or drafts, a Class C felony, for two of the checks which were each over $750. Abrams was accused of writing numerous bad checks to The Bookie.
