  • Sharon Morton concludes 30-year career as store clerk

    Sharon Morton retired Tuesday as one of the clerks at Tick Klock Drug in Colfax. She ended an almost 30-year career attending to customers’ needs in Colfax drug stores. She began working for Roger Edgren at the Elk Drug Store and spent five to six years there before it closed. She moved on to Tick Klock and spent the last 22 years helping customers at the counter.     In a few years, the marina section of Boyer Park must be replaced. Port Director Joe Poire told Port of Whitman Commissioners at the April 3 meeting that the biggest problem is the marina docks which are now 40 years old. They are deteriorating and the pilings are coming loose. Port commissioners hope that the port can afford to replace the docks when the time comes.     Mockonema 4H Club members now can stay warm during the meetings thanks to a grant. Club leader Eric Appel said the club received a $1,700 grant from the Colfax branch of the AmericanWest Bank, the Washington State 4H Foundation and Harry Burcalow Grant. The club will purchase a new pellet stove and install it in the Wilcox Grange hall where the club holds its regular meetings. “We were looking for a heat source for the grange and we were told about the grant,” Appel said.     Following the fire last week that destroyed an 1889 building in Palouse – on the night before the grand opening of a bar and restaurant on the ground floor – the cause remains to be determined.     Two state Department of Ecology officials were seen observing land along Big Alkalai Creek Monday. Jan Moore who lives in Hay noticed an unfamiliar vehicle pass by and then recognized the two men inside. They were Mike Kuttel and Chad Atkins from the Spokane DOE office.
