    Colfax baseball Coach Mike Parrish reports the Bulldogs have a record 32 players out for the team this year with a lot of veterans back. The Bulldogs will start their season at the Asotin tournament Saturday with a game against Potlatch at 2 p.m. and a game against the Colton Wildcats at 4:30.   • Kendall Yard project opens new town link for area riders

    Development of the Kendall Yards last year in Spokane has provided a new link for bicycle trail riders from Whitman County and other points of origin. The Kendall Yard project is located near downtown Spokane west of Riverfront Park.     Pictured below, Erwin Hall of Colfax accepts a memorial in honor of his deceased son, Doug Hall, a long-time coach for Little Guy wrestlers in Colfax and a key organizer of many of the junior wrestling events in Colfax.     Colfax Golf Course plans a grand opening for Friday with a remodeled club building and introduction of a new manager, Trent Goetz, who has operated the Airway Hills Miniature Golf Course on Airport Road in Pullman. Assisting Goetz will be Reece Barron. The Colfax course has already been open for play, and Tim Heiydt is back as course superintendent.     Colfax basketball team capped off the season run with an awards banquet last Tuesday, March 1, in the high school cafeteria. Coach Reece Jenkin noted the team over the season learned how to deal with adversity and he looks forward to the future after building a foundation with some hard-fought games this year, particularly at the end of the season when the young Colfax squad was very close to a breakthrough against some veteran league foes.     Colfax boys topped team honors Tuesday with a 218 in the season opener. Other team scores were 244 for Lind/Ritzville/Sprague and 320 for Inchelium. Kasey Johnson booked a two-over 37 for medalist honors, and Sawyer Spackman of St. George's hit a 38. Tied for third were Hunter and Chance Weitz and Jimmy Psomas of St. George's all with 39.     Colfax softball coach Terry Eng noted last year’s team was made up of a lot of sophomores who had a successful year, and most of those players are back as juniors to make another run at it. Colfax is scheduled to start the season with a doubleheader today at Freeman. Lone graduate off the squad from last year was Rachel Robinson, one of the key players on the team.     Voters approval of a levy lid lift in Palouse has led to discussion by the city council about returning the third police officer to full-time.     The Rosalia Volunteer Firefighters Association hosted a benefit spaghetti feed and auction for Jeff Trull on March 16. Trull is a Rosalia High School graduate and has lived with multiple sclerosis for quite some time and was recently diagnosed with ALS. They are David Lange, chairman; Cory Aeschliman, vice chairman; Jan Turney, auditor; Rhod McIntosh, secretary; and Walter Riley, board member.   • Power failure leads to Rosalia water drain

    A power outage caused Rosalia residents to go without water for a short time this weekend. According to Rosalia Mayor Nan Konishi, the town experienced a power outage about 1:30 a.m. on Friday which was repaired by Avista at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. “Everything appeared to be fine until I got a phone call on Sunday from a person who lives up on the hill who had no water,” Konishi said.     During the regular Monday morning workshop, Whitman County Commissioner Art Swannack discussed a possible rental agreement with the Whitman Conservation District. WCD is looking for new office space since the Natural Resources Conservation Service developed a new policy about charging rent to the conservation district that would amount to $25,000 annually.     Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers asked the county commissioners Monday to add more than $50,000 to the sheriff’s budget, most of which would be for a deputy’s salary. At the end of last fall’s budgeting sessions by the commission, one deputy position was eliminated in cutback’s of the sheriff’s budget for 2014. Myers budget was cut $323,000 from his original budget proposal of $3.5 million.     A marijuana growing and processing application from a town resident was discussed at a town meeting in Garfield Monday night. About 20 people gathered at the community center for a meeting called by the town’s planning and zoning committee. The application was filed by Debra Lantzy who lives on 10th Street.     The state Department of Transportation has turned down a request to pay for City of Colfax expenses in combating the Feb. 12 flood in downtown Colfax. Mayor Todd Vanek reported on the DOT response at Monday night’s city council session. Vanek met with DOT officials March 4 and received a letter three days later from Keith Metcalf, regional administrator for the Department of Transportation.     The Oakesdale School District will put forth a new school construction bond to the voters April 22. The ballot follows the failure of a previous one in February.
