    Five sets of sisters played for the Tekoa-Oakesdale varsity basketball team this month over three games. The younger ones were eighth-graders brought up from the junior varsity, from which they were summoned because of low numbers of high school players. Before the Pomeroy game Jan. 11 four Nighthawk varsity players were suspended for an athletic code violation, while a fifth one was out due to a concussion.     Mitch Barney won the 113-pound class at the 18-team Kittitas Tournament last Saturday while Josh Miller placed second at 160 and Kevin Knauff took fourth, also at 160. Mitch Barney on his way to first place in the 113-pound class at the Kittitas tournament Saturday afternoon. In the 132-pound bracket, Thomas Newton finished fourth as well.     Colfax City Council members Tuesday night approved a motion to slate a hearing on the new critical areas ordinance. The hearing has been set for the next regular council session Feb. 4. Members of the council indicated they will conduct the hearing to get residents’ comments on the proposed ordinance, and then take some time before actually voting on the revised ordinance which designates critical areas for protection.     Trial dates have been set for Daniel and Frank Lazcano who face murder charges in the death of Marcus Schur in 2011. Daniel Lazcano’s trial will start on Feb. 11 at 9 a.m., and Frank Lazcano’s trial will begin on Feb. 26 at 9 a.m. The trials will start with jury selection, according to county prosecutor Denis Tracy. Twelve jurors will be selected with one to two alternates from a pool of registered voters and drivers over the age of 18 who live in the county.     A proposal is under consideration in Tekoa and Oakesdale to combine girls and boys basketball with Rosalia. The change would make for the Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia grouping for all high school and junior high sports.     A project that began as a chicken coop now is a family business that specializes in finding homes for old wood. The wood from this snowy Winona barn will soon find a new home in sunny California. An old barn in Winona that was recently torn down will become part of someone’s California dream home, or some other type of building, thanks to Len Mathia of Garfield, and his crew of salvagers.     The Whitman County Planning Commission is seeking two new members to fill vacancies. If the vacancies aren’t filled soon, county commissioners may have to consider reducing the size of the planning board from nine members to seven. “If a month from now, there’s not any more board members, I would recommend making it fewer,” Whitman County Planner Alan Thomson told the county commissioners Tuesday morning.
