    Palouse River Quilts will open in Colfax March 1 in the same Main Street location as the former Quilted Moose quilt shop on Main Street. Margo Balzarini of Colfax and Patricia Arnold of Thornton are co-proprietors of the new shop. They will be in the “street side,” or the corner half, of the Grady Building. “We want to have an elegant shop here with fabrics by Moda, Hoffman and other companies we are exploring,” Balzarini said. “We’ll have batiks, a sampling of flannels and some kid’s fabric.” They will meet with their “rep” this week...

  • Influenza hitting county hard

    The flu bug is striking Whitman County, and it might get worse before it gets better. Influenza has been confirmed in the county and is likely widespread, according to the county health department. The number of cases is difficult to estimate as the flu is not a reportable condition.     Whitman County Clerk, Shirley Bafus, thought she was the object of a joke at first. Whitman County Clerk Shirley Bafus takes a phone call in her office recently. Her credit card was charged by someone who ordered an expensive ham from a Connecticut company. A Connecticut company, Hamlovers.com, called Bafus last week to inquire about her order for a $1,200 Spanish ham. The order was charged to her credit card.     Georgia Rae Marchand was the first baby born at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in 2013. Weighing seven pounds, one ounce, she was born Jan. 14 to Hailey Bergey and Justin Marchand of St. John. She joins sister Rhiley, 1 1/2. For being the first baby of the year, Georgia was given a wagon filled with stuffed animals, books, swaddlers, blankets, clothes, slippers and toys.
