Toy box receives strong support, but lower use

COLFAX-The Fireman's Toy Box give-away last week provided toys to more than 200 Whitman County youth, according to organizer Bill Knox.

While down some from last year's 267 total, Knox said volunteers met their goal.

Fundraising this year was very successful, Knox said. He has been overseeing the Toy Box for more than 30 years.

More than $10,000 was received in donations - the exact number was unknown at press time as Knox was still calculating donations.

People also brought in toys.

Knox, his wife and volunteers purchased about half the toys from businesses in Pullman, Moscow and Lewiston. The rest were bought on-line.

The Toy Box was open four days last week at the First Baptist Church gym.

Volunteers made a promotional push after the first two days to get more families signed up.

Knox said next year they may look at additional methods to advertise the event.

Toys can still be accessed at the fire station through Christmas for those in need.

Donations to the Toy Box go to purchase toys; no fees or administrative costs are taken.
