Pugh advocates for local control over fall school re-opening

The Colfax School board met Monday night by Google Meet and covered items such as adoption of a new math and science curriculum, two resignations and a discussion of what may come next in lifting school COVID-19 restrictions.

“What I am advocating for as hard as I can is we want local control with our county health department,” Superintendent Jerry Pugh told the Gazette later. “Olympia shouldn't be telling us what it's like in Whitman County... We do our best work with our kids here.”

For the board's annual adoption of new curriculum, this year features grade 9-12 math and science, the updates advised by Brenda Kneeshaw, district curriculum specialist, and David Gibb, Colfax Junior-Senior High School principal.

The board also approved Monday night resignations for Lisa Retzer, Para-Educator, and Eric Patton, assistant junior high baseball coach.

Boardmembers then set their meeting schedule through the rest of the year. They will meet next on June 22 at 7 p.m. – possibly in person as Phase III re-opening allows or otherwise back on Google Meet.

The meeting link may be found on the district's website.
