WSU students run out of fish to hang

Fifty-four WSU students came over to Colfax Sunday to attach decorated fish to the fence along the flood control channel next to the west alley. Scheduled for two hours, the work session was logged as a WSU civic enrichment project for the students. Many in Sunday's group were members of WSU sororities.

The aim of Sunday's work session was for each student to attach 21 fish during the two-hour work session. That would have added 1,134 fish to the overall count along the fences.

Actually, the students hung all the painted fish in the council's inventory and finished the job early. The council has one more box of painted fish, but it can't go up on the fence until sealer is applied.

The Arts Council had over 3,700 of the fish cut out in different patterns in the sintex plastic material.

More fish are expected to be painted by Colfax students this fall and the council plans to again sponsor an open fish painting session in The Center during the Oct. 3 First Thursday.

The fish were attached in a wave pattern with three rows of seven fish in each section of fence between upright support poles.

The fish decorations now extend along the fence starting behind the library and continuing the length of the N 100 block and into the N 200 block.

Fish were also attached to the fence along the north side of the Wall Street Bridge across the South Fork of the Palouse River.
