The Commoner, Nov. 17, 1893

The threshing firm of Skeels & Wiley of Palouse city is blamed for unnatural treatment of an employee by neglecting attentions to a wounded employee, and thereby perhaps causing the loss of a life. The firm was engaged in threshing near Colton, when one of the employees, named James Mott, was accidentally struck in the abdomen by a doubletree. Internal injuries were thus produced. Little attention was paid to the unfortunate fellow by his employers, although his sufferings were intense. He was allowed to remain for several hours alone on a pile of straw, before he was removed to a house. After ten hours of exposure to the cold and damp, he was taken to Colton, where Dr. McCollem treated him. The accident happened Friday, Nov. 3, and Mott died of internal hemorrhage at 11 a.m. the following day.

The Colfax Commoner, Nov. 15, 1918

Fire broke out in the basement of the Mrs. Rosa Miller home at 5:30 Saturday morning and within a few moments after the firemen arrived the blaze was under control. Mrs Miller's home is located at Island and Lake streets, and the house was completed last summer. The fire started in the basement and it is stated that there had been no fire in the furnace for several hours. When the firemen reported, they found the wood pile in the basement burning and the flames had burned their way to the upper floor. The greater part of the damage was caused by smoke and water. The building will be repaired at once as well as the furniture and furnishings.

Acting on a resolution adopted by Whitman County Pomona Grange, the county commissioners have authorized Paul J. Gimlin to conduct an immediate survey of the common barberry, host plant to the black stem rust in wheat. Cooperating in the educational and experimental program leading to the eradication of barberry will be County Agent Troy Lindley, who estimates the rust caused at least $50,000 damage in the county during the last crop season.

Whitman County Gazette, Nov. 18, 1993

The Whitman County noxious weed program will have to get by with a $65,000 budget next year unless the local agriculture groups can convince county commissioners to install an assessment to support a larger budget. The county commissioners met Monday night to get input from the public on how they would like to see the weed program operated. The general consensus from those attending the meeting was to keep the program fully funded.
