March 24, 1893

On Sunday night Oakesdale was again visited by fire, two of the remaining four wooden buildings inside the fire limits being totally destroyed. The flames were discovered issuing from the rear of the Fashion Saloon, occupied by A. Requa, at about 7:45 in the evening. Adjourning the saloon building on the east was the empty store, just vacated by G. L. Barton, dry goods, and the two structures were soon a mass of flames.

Chief of Police Mackay is worrying his wits over a strange burglary that occurred Tuesday night. The difficulty is to determine what could have been the motive of the thieves or what profit they hoped to realize, in the high school building. At any rate, something or other induced two men to make their way into that building at about midnight that night and thoroughly rummage all its desks, cabinets and closets.

March 22, 1918

Marion G. Manchester, a nephew of B. T. Manchester, was arrested with Claude James of Garfield Tuesday and charged with stealing cattle belonging to B. T. Manchester.

Mary P. Bellinger was named county clerk by the board of county commissioners Tuesday to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jas. A. Williams, who resigns to take up farming in Canada.

March 19, 1943

A cow belonging to Adam Schoeff met an unusual death last Friday afternoon when it was struck by an airplane on a hillside pasture near the Hay road a short distance south of the Dusty-LaCrosse highway.

Samuel Emil Stueckle, age 20, was instantly killed at about noon Wednesday when the tractor he was driving tipped over at the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stueckle, about seven miles east of Colfax, on the Palouse road.

Rosalia School District will vote May 28 on a special levy to build a swimming pool, Chairman Joseph J. Freeze of the Rosalia School Board told the Gazette this week.

LeRoy Schafer, manager of the Wheat Growers of Endicott, applied for a building permit at the county engineer's office March 14, listing plans for a $135,000 elevator at Thera.

March 25, 1993

The Colfax Eagles food booth at the Palouse Empire Fair sustained extensive damage over the winter because of a roof failure. The booth sustained extensive water damage and the ceiling has collapsed, according to a report made by James Karr of Pullman, who has been hired part-time to work at the grounds.

Sheriff Steve Tomson last week urged residents to be cautious of unscrupulous repairmen. Tomson said in recent weeks his department has had two reports regarding fraudulent repair services. One involved septic system maintenance, another involved repair of water damage in a house. From the reports, it is apparent the targets of these unscrupulous repairmen are infirm and/or elderly Whitman County residents.

Homeowners in Whitman County could face either higher or lower mortgage payments and insurance premiums as a result of efforts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state Department of Ecology. The two agencies are updating flood hazard maps throughout the state, and should prepare a new map for Whitman County in the next three to five years.

County commissioners Monday approved a contract with BCL Electric of Moscow for the installation of cameras and removal of surplus wiring in the county jail. The projects are part of the county's upgrade of the jail's security system.
