Colfax starts final five run on south side of NE play

Carson Cloaninger, who hit 23 for Colfax Friday against the Springdale Chargers, soars for the hoop in front of Cory Hubert of the Chargers.

Colfax hoopsters will travel to Reardan Friday to play the Indians and then return home Saturday to play neighboring Tekoa/Rosalia in the first of a run of four home games to wrap up the league campaign.

The boys will start the second loop on the NE south side after making a 5-0 run in the first round. Reardan will host Friday after sustaining losses to St. George’s and Northwest Christian in the two league rounds last weekend. The Indians now have a 3-12 record.

Tekoa/Rosalia last weekend sustained losses to the same two north side teams and will play here Saturday after hosting LRS at Rosalia in what figures to be a close battle.

At home against the Chargers from Mary Walker Friday in their lone games of the week, the Bulldogs again were slow in getting out of the chute, but managed to post a strong second half to post a 57-41 win and advance the league mark to 9-2.

The Chargers stuck with Colfax for a good part of the first half. The Bulldogs had a slim 8-6 lead after the first quarter and posted a 30-24 edge at the break.

Junior Carson Cloaninger unloaded for 23 points with four shots from outside the three-point arch.

On defense Colfax used half court trap to post and edge in turnovers. At the end of the round the Bulldogs found it easier to go to the net and collected a lot of late points on the inside.

Colfax was called for just 10 fouls for the game, but they again shot a not-so-good 7-15 off the toss line.

The Chargers, who were led by Domonic Abrahamson and Evan Kitt, each with eight points, but they hit 1-7 off the toss line.

After the Bulldogs host TR Saturday, they will Liberty in what figures to be their toughest foe on the south side. Colfax defeated a Liberty team which was just cranking up after making another run at the state 2B football title.

Liberty has since stacked an 11-2 record.
