WSU retirees

David Benscoter, a leader with the Lost Apple Project, will address the WSU Retirees Association’s monthly meeting Tuesday, April 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the Pullman Senior Center.

Benscoter will detail how varieties of apples planted prior to 1920 in the Inland Empire are discovered. When lost apples are rediscovered, steps are taken to propagate the trees and make them available to the public. Research and results are being preserved through the WSU Archives.

According to a recent Whitman County Historical Society newsletter, an estimated 17,000 named apple varieties have originated in North America, with only around 4,000 still existing today. The WCHS partnered last year with the Lost Apple Project to aid in the discovery of lost apple varieties locally.

Pullman Senior Center is located on the first floor of Pullman City Hall, 325 SE Paradise Street. Monthly meetings sponsored by the WSU Retirees Association are open to the public and local residents are encouraged to attend, according to Dan Coonrad, president. Refreshments are served at each meeting.
