Senior citizen passes voided at Colfax High

A change in policy on a senior citizens' pass for Colfax High School events has drawn a reaction.

Since the start of the school year, seniors who attend Colfax football games and volleyball matches with a Bulldog pass have been told it will no longer allow entry.

The change came after district staff members went to a training session earlier this year.

“This is how we were advised to do things, to stay legal,” said Nathan Holbrook, Colfax athletic director.

The funds go through the Associated Student Body.

“It's really about compliance with the law,” said Superintendent Jerry Pugh. “The decision was made at the building level and I was notified. I went into research mode and received confirmation from the (state) auditor's office.”

A policy of free admission for those 65-and-older due to low-income is permissable.

“We will be working on a structure to allow seniors in at a reduced fee,” Pugh said. “Our schools are their schools. In the meantime, if needed, I just ask them to give us a call and we will work something out.”

Pugh indicated he first heard of the issue Sept. 6 at the home volleyball opener.

“We certainly appreciate the support of the community, and we recognize the support of the community,” he said.

Over the years, senior citizens picked up Bulldog passes by showing a driver's license at the school office.

“I think the people are probably more upset how it was done vs. that it was done,” said Bruce Hochsprung, 74, a longtime pass holder whose late father, Ed, also had a Bulldog pass for many years. “That's the main point. Nobody runs a business like that. They should've put out an announcement and at least asked for input. The constituency doesn't feel you're consulted about it or even informed.”

John and Jane Aune are two more holders of the now ineligible passes.

“It's not about the money at all,” said Jane Aune, a CHS graduate and retired teacher. “It's too bad you can't do that. It was kind of a nice thing to do.”

Senior admission to sporting events is now $4.

“I'm not going to quit going to games,” Jane said.
