New roles, new faces for Colton softball

With exactly 10 practices in, Colton played host to Dayton for a doubleheader last Friday and won both. Then it rained again.

The team got rained out Tuesday for a game at Asotin, which was set to be played Wednesday.

Colton coach Brad Nilson's roster is down one major player and a few others. Senior pitcher Zoe Moser is out with a knee injury from basketball, and contributors from last year, Georgia Meyer and Ali Hennigar, did not come out for 2016.

“It'll be an interesting year,” Nilson said.

The team roster includes three seniors, three juniors, no sophomores and five freshman, three of whom played as eighth-graders last year.

Returning veterans include Moser, a four-year starter, who is out for an unknown amount of time; Rachel Meyer at first base and MaryAnn Jacobs. Kendyl Druffel and Daylinn Smith represent the juniors, along with Emma Schultheis, who played catcher last year.

“She's pitching this year,” Nilson said.

Freshman Abby Kelly is in at catcher.

Other freshmen are Jordan Moerhle in left field and Emily Schultheis at pitcher. A new freshman joins the lineup, Maggie Tluid, who has not played softball since second grade.

“Yeah, we're thin,” Nilson said of his 12-player group, coming off a fourth-place finish at state last year after six consecutive 1B championships.

In centerfield is Smith.

“She has a gun-and-a-half,” Nilson said. “She throws harder than I do.”

Aside from Wednesday's rescheduled game against Asotin, Colton is set to play Touchet at home Saturday.

Nilson is holding out hope for what Moser will be able to do this season.

“I was counting on her, let's put it that way,” he said.

If she can't play?

“It'll make some girls grow up,” he said.
