Colton falls to L.C., Gar-Pal stomps Pomeroy

With a Colton loss and a Garfield-Palouse win last Friday night, local prospects for a playoff berth in the Southeast 1B league began to form.

Garfield-Palouse 44, Pomeroy 8

After a decisive win over Pomeroy at home last Friday night, Garfield-Palouse is in position to take third place in the league if they win their next two games.

Preparing this week for a road matchup at Sunnyside Christian, the Vikings are without three players, whose workouts instead are taking place at a motel in Louisville, Kent.

Senior lineman Mitch Jamison, senior linebacker/center Gabe Cocking and junior receiver Ian Niebergs are at the National FFA Convention – with direction from Coach Will Woltering on how many push-ups and sit-ups to do every day.

Before the three left, they played key roles in the team’s dominant win over Pomeroy, in which the Vikings led 38-0 at halftime.

Taking the opening kick for a scoring drive, Gar-Pal stopped Pomeroy, then scored again.

"Then it just kind of snowballed a bit," Woltering said.

The Vikings soon recovered two onside kicks and had the game nearly in hand midway through the second quarter.

Pomeroy finally scored in the fourth on a pass play to senior Bryan McGreevy.

The Vikings held them to 84 total yards of offense.

"Our defensive and offensive lines pretty much dominated," Woltering said.

On offense, Cole Sanderson ran for 162 yards on 23 carries while quarterback Hunter Woltering, another senior, went 12 for 20 for 234 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for three touchdowns.

Receiver Tyler Thurman caught nine passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns. Niebergs had three catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Traveling to Sunnyside Saturday, the team will be without junior fullback/tight end Wyatt Griner, who is sidelined with an illness. Freshman Evan Weaggraff is still out with a hamstring injury but may be back for Saturday’s game. Filling in for him has been freshman Travis Knauff.

Liberty Christian 58, Colton 20

Colton dropped to 3-4 on the season (2-4 league) with a loss to Liberty Christian for the Wildcats’ homecoming game.

Playing in the afternoon Oct. 24, Colton fell behind 44-0 in the first quarter and the Patriots held them in check the rest of the way.

Wildcats’ quarterback Carter Dahmen went 16-for-28 in the game with 225 yards and two touchdowns, while Brady Chadwick caught nine passes for 104 yards. Lane Moore had four catches for 104 yards.

The Wildcats will play next at Pomeroy Friday at 7 p.m.

Touchet 58, St. John-Endicott 12

"Whenever 14’s on the field, that’s your guy," St. John-Endicott coach Steve Selk told Jimmy Hollingshead last week against Touchet. "That’s your assignment."

When the game was over, the senior defensive back could claim only minor success as the Indians’ Colter McKeown again ran loose against another Southeast 1B league foe.

Touchet led 36-12 at halftime and built from there.

For the Eagles’ offense, senior Wilson Lundberg had 20 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Hollingshead carried the ball 15 times for 90 yards and a touchdown.

"That was the extent of our scoring," said Selk.

The loss dropped S.J.E. to 2-6 on the year (1-4 in league).

This week they play at Washtucna on Halloween night against the Tigercats of LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus. The team will be without five starters – gone to Louisville, Kent. for the National FFA convention.

They will be back in uniform for the season’s last game, at home against Sunnyside Christian Nov. 6.

"If we can win out, that’s four wins this year," said Selk. "We want to improve every year and that’s an improvement over last year."

The Eagles won three games in the 2013 season.
