Weather spotter class set at WSU

A weather spotter training class will be Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE) Room 518, WSU, Pullman. Parking is available in the CUE or Fine Arts Parking Garage for $3 after 5 p.m.

Whitman County Emergency Management, in partnership with WSU Emergency Management, arranged to bring the National Weather Service’s class to the Palouse.

Residents are invited to learn about being the “eyes and ears” of the National Weather Service. Local weather reports coupled with radar, satellite and other data has enabled the NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings and statements for types of hazardous weather.

The National Weather Service is looking for volunteers who would like to become official weather spotters. Whitman County and WSU have NOAA StormReady Recognition which gives communities and individuals the skills and education needed to survive severe weather.

The training sessions are free and the public is invited. Training lessons last about two hours and include information on NWS operations, products and services, the basics of thunderstorm development, severe thunderstorm structure, flash floods, high winds, winter storms, as well as spotter procedures. Each class is tailored to your local area.
