McCoy museum slates apple talk

David Benscoter of Chatteroy will give a presentation on the history of apple growing and orcharding in Whitman County Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m. at the McCoy Valley Museum in Oakesdale.

Benscoter has researched extinct apples that were prominent in Whitman County in the early 1900s. He believes he has discovered an extinct variety known as the "Fall Jeneting." This unusually shaped apple, considered one of the best apples in the 1800s for both canning and cooking but lost since the early 1900s, was rediscovered in Whitman County by Benscoter.
