Broeckel sisters attend services for Cpl. Clouse

Saturday, Karen Broeckel, accompanied by her sisters Jeanette Nolan of Colfax and Patty Wieber of Spokane, attended the funeral services of Cpl. Justin Clouse of Sprague at the Life Center Church in Spokane. The 22-year-old soldier was killed in Afghanistan along with four of his fellow soldiers on June 9. Clouse was the great-great-nephew of the women’s mother, Amelia Schaal Broeckel. He is survived by his parents Rob and Tina Clouse, brother Josh Clouse, niece Ava, grandparents Danny and Nadine Nilles and many relatives and friends.

LaCrosse Farmers’ Festival was the site of several class reunions. The class of 1954 held their 60th reunion. Former Dusty residents attending the event included Greta Herman Stueckle of Colfax and Reuben Stueckle of Puyallup.

LaCrosse High School class of 1964 met for their 50th year reunion, riding in the festival parade followed by a picnic in the park. Among those attending from the Dusty area were Linda Wigen Hennigar and Vicki Krom Broeckel. Former Dusty residents in attendance were Jon Pitts, Steptoe; Dianne Stueckle Morris, Valleyford and John Schoeff, Spokane. The group enjoyed the community barbecue at the Grillbilly Café in the evening followed by further visiting, munchies and cake at the Gathering Place.

The class of 1974 held their reunion in the city park, rode in the parade and had their evening meal prepared by classmate Shelly Bigsby Ralston and her son Wade. Attending from the Dusty area were Janice Stueckle Smith, Harmon Smith, Loren Scaggs, and former Dusty residents Jody Stueckle O’Brien of Bremerton and Miriam Wiebe of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Reuben and Judy Stueckle were guests of his brother and sister-in-law, David and Phyllis Stueckle from Friday to Tuesday. They were here to attend Reuben’s 60th high school class reunion.

Karen Broeckel joined guests at the Parsonage Bed and Breakfast for supper Friday evening. Miriam Wiebe and Irene Cruthers Reynolds, both of Canada, were there for their 40th high school class reunion during the LaCrosse Farmers’ Festival. When Wiebe attended LaCrosse High School, her father, the late Rev. Lloyd Wiebe, was pastor of the Country Bible Church and her family actually lived in the Parsonage at that time. After supper, Broeckel and Wiebe took a back roads tour of the Dusty area so Wiebe could see the area again.

Sunday dinner guests of Karen Broeckel were her brother and sister-in-law, Al and June Broeckel of Tacoma, and sisters Jeanette Nolan of Colfax and Patty Wieber of Spokane. Nephew Greg Nolan stopped in for a visit and dessert on his way home from a motorcycle event in Oregon. Al and June had attended the Farmers’ Festival in LaCrosse on Saturday.

Helen and Dick Appel attended the wedding reception for Joe and Brandi Zuger in Walla Walla. Afterwards they drove to Brush Prairie. Their daughter and son-in-law, Deb and Bob Stavig, were hosting a reception for their son Scott’s graduation.

Gena Jones and Mario Maero arrived from Chatillon, Italy, and are visiting at the homes of her mother Fran and brother Bryan and niece Emelie. Gena’s children Meggie and Damien, who have lived here since September, will return home with their mother in early July. Meggie will return to Washington in late August to attend Walla Walla Community College.

Alex Urtaza of Las Cruces, N.M., and Bonnie Kirlin of Tenino, spent a few days visiting the Joneses. Sharon Urtaza, also of Las Cruces, remained for two weeks helping Bryan Jones on the ranch. She will return to her counseling position on July 27. Sharon and Bonnie are daughters of the late Neal Edwards and the late Virginia Jones Edwards.

Many family, friends and neighbors paid their final respects to Joyce Appel last Wednesday at the Baptist Church in Colfax. Appel had been a resident of the Dusty area for many years. She died June 13 after a short illness. She is survived by her three children, Sally, John and Joanne, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Bruce and Hanna Jones and daughter Annie of Burlington, Vt., their son Abel of Boston, Mass., and his friend Marissa Deegan arrived on June 11 and spent the weekend with the Jones family.

Warren Jones and Julie Walker of Hayden, Idaho, joined the group for a four-day visit.
