Rosalia High baseball at 3-6

The Rosalia High School baseball team is 3-6 on the year after splitting a doubleheader at Pomeroy Saturday and losing to Gar-Pal/Tekoa-Oakesdale on Tuesday.

Brian Reid returns as coach after coaching the former Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia for five years before. A fourth-grade teacher at Rosalia for 14 years, he taught his players as elementary-school kids.

Returning from last year’s roster for Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia are Craig Nelson, Ryan Maley, Jason Brown and Clay Shelton. New players include junior Lucas Engel (off the golf team last year), Anthony Riley, sophomore Nathan Jeske and freshmen Kade Holling and Troy Pittsley.

Maley is leading the team at the plate, hitting .410 while Nelson is hitting .333.

They went to Pomeroy Saturday and lost 17-7 in the first game before taking the second 17-1.

"Everyone got a hit in Pomeroy except for one kid," said Reid.

At home on Tuesday vs. Gar-Pal, Rosalia lost 12-6.

Nelson led at bat with a grand slam in the second inning and a single in the third. Maley hit two singles while Holling had a double and Shelton hit a single.

The team committed five errors in the game.

For Gar-Pal/Tekoa-Oakesdale, Ian Niebergs led the team with a three-run home run in the third inning, a two-run single in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth.

On the mound for the Vikings, Hunter Woltering pitched seven innings to give up six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Rosalia used a combination of four pitchers in the game; Brown, Nelson, Maley and Holling.

"Overall, it’s been going pretty good," Reid said. "Our outfield, and the corners are inexperienced, but I can’t ask for anything more. We’re hustling and learning, getting better every game."
